History of Lidl
The distribution company "Lidl" was founded around the year 1930 by Joseph Schwarz by becoming a potential shareholder of a company in Heilbronn. Lidl currently has 3,277 stores in its home country of Germany. The German distribution company exists across 26 countries in Europe. Previously, the company only sold exotic fruits. Following the successful launch of his business, Schwarz renamed the company “Lidl & Schwarrz KG”.
During the Second World War in 1944, the buildings of the company were ravaged by bombardments. This did not intimidate the famous Schwarz because only 10 years later he had revived his business by opening a store in Heilbronn again. After the relaunch of its business, some changes were made such as moving the headquarters to Neckarsulm in Baden-Württemberg. In 1968, Joseph's son named Dieter Schwarz took his share by investing in the company. For his part, the son wanted to expand into other activities and he managed to open the first retail store. Quickly, in 1973, he decided to enter the supermarket market at discount prices. After many difficulties in choosing the name of this new entity, Schwarz finally found the ideal name and it was “Lidl” and started its activities in Ludwigshafen. Fortunately the idea took over and the company was transformed into a chain of food stores.
In 1977 Josef Schwarz died. It was then his son Dieter Schwarz who took over to run the family business. Following the sequence of its successes, in 1988, the company developed towards other countries by starting in France, then in Italy, in Spain, in Belgium and many others still. In 2017, Lidl took its first step into the United States of America by opening its first store in Fredericksburg, Virginia. In 2020, Lidl's stores totaled 11,200 around the world, of which 1,550 were located in France. With all of its stores, Lidl employs approximately over 300,000 people.
