indomitable spirit
Cruelty
History of Le Calamitus
The story of this dark spirit known as Calamitus is horrific and abominable. Formed from the slaughtered remains of hundreds of battlefields, it is a hideous amalgamation of damned souls, bound and captive within a shell of dead flesh.
He is dressed in cemetery livery, bears the iconography of death, and wields a pair of cruel scythes, whose blades are engraved with ominous seals that ooze evil miasmas. But he also has another, more grotesque form... that of a serious specter, wrapped in ragged clothes and crowned with grave iron. However he appears, he is a terrifying embodiment of death itself.
The Calamitus was created by Losan K'Leth to be an immortal soul hunter and relentless collector of fresh physical vessels for his Cult. The ritual used in its creation cost the lives of hundreds of K'Leth's most loyal servants when their dark souls were used to fuel the psychological monstrosity they had helped to shape. K'Leth had discovered the method for creating and binding such an entity through his studies of ancient texts and cruel esoteric experiments, and he was eager to see if such a thing could truly be accomplished.
Storms raged for days, battering the isolated cemetery in the desolate Stormwind Lands, which the necromancer had chosen as the ideal site to perform the necessary rites to draw in the energies of death that permeated the region. Slowly, painfully, the Calamitus amalgamated into a cocoon of cemetery mud and bloody burial shrouds, each soul making it more powerful, until finally it was strong enough to burst from this dreadful womb and kneel before its creator.
Even though some of K'Leth's disciples grumbled about the price that had to be paid, he believed that the end result was worth it.
The determination that drove him and the goals he pursued were those of K'Leth. The Calamitus was nothing more than a grotesque tool of the Cult's founder. The latter sent him to scour the territory in search of vessels, and when he found them, he removed their spirits from their bodies.
The Calamitus struck army camps, bandit hideouts, isolated farms, harvest festivals, and even ships at sea—anywhere it could claim multiple souls at once. It had no subtlety, showed no caution. It was an elemental force, directed by its master toward potential targets and unleashed to carry out its grim task.
He then eagerly consumed the plaintive souls he had chosen, using them for sustenance and leaving empty shells behind, ready to be collected by members of the Cult. This situation continued for a time, but K'Leth's creation of this entity had not gone unnoticed. Indeed, the mystical ripples caused by his invention resonated even as far away as Anathraad, where Siroth noticed them and observed them, distractedly at first, then with keen interest.
Finally, he decided to act to seize control of the Calamitus for himself. Whether this act was motivated solely by hostility or because Siroth believed the Calamitus could be useful for his own machinations is a matter of conjecture among the few members of the Cult of K'Leth who knew the truth of what followed.
In any case, Siroth stretched his mind and sought to usurp K'Leth's control over the entity. K'Leth, recognizing the threat, resisted, though more out of pride and anger than with any real hope of success. And at that moment, when the attention of both of his would-be masters was focused on each other... the Calamitus escaped.
The days that followed were filled with horrors beyond imagination. The Calamitus, mad and aimless, ravaged all of Peltas without reason or motive. Wherever he went, death followed. Even the servants of the Cult were not safe from his frenzy, and more than one secret sanctuary and repository of soul gems was turned into a mausoleum when the Calamitus devoured all the souls within, both those with bodies and those without.
Quickly, the fury of Calamitus caught the attention of a Lightbringer known as Gariel, one of those who had chosen exile in the wilds of the world after the Red Crusade. Gariel set out to kill the entity before it could do any more harm.
It was not difficult to find her, and soon Gariel, with his iron wings and spear of heavenly flames, swooped down on her quarry in the wild lands of the Krokhan Desert. There were no witnesses to the conflict that ensued. Some Nomad tribes speak of a night rich with thunder and flames in the clouds, but beyond that, no one saw the battle.
However, in the end, Gariel no longer existed, and the Calamitus had become something far worse. It flew away on new wings, wearing Gariel's blackened, tattered clothes and letting out a hungry cry that echoed in the soul of every living being in Peltas, as well as in Siroth's mind. Following the cry to its source, he struck and took control of the raging monstrosity, bending it to his will as K'Leth felt his defeat.
During those first moments, Siroth studied his new servant with curiosity, for the Calamitus had changed enormously, not only in form, but also in hunger... he desired another soul identical to that of Gariel. So much so that he looked greedily at his Demonic Spawn, who, for their part, had no desire to get close to such an abomination.
Siroth was delighted, for the Calamitus could prove to be the answer to his eternal stalemate with Lumaya's servants.
And if not, well, he would make sure that he was, at the very least, well fed...
