Story of Pile-Ice Bear (Ursine Icecrusher)
The savage warriors of Norr are the subject of many tales. Their reckless bravery and contempt for death are legendary even today, when most clans have long since assimilated into the great Telerian kingdoms or been exiled to the eastern arid lands on the other side. of the Strait of Valdemar. But many still survive in the arctic tundra that covers the shores of the Great North Sea. And these hardy people have countless heroes to their credit. Centuries ago, when the Norr still ruled vast swathes of northern lands, two brothers were born into an isolated clan. Arne and Ulf were appointed by their father, who hoped to bestow on them the virtues of the eagle and the wolf. Although not wealthy, the father was a man of war and had taught his brothers all he knew about battles. Over the years, Arne and Ulf grew into mighty warriors. But, as is often the case in legends, tragedy struck when you least expected it. First, a few hunters disappeared as they walked away from the clan village. Then the old men, the women and even the children who ventured outside began to disappear in their turn. At least two dozen people disappeared within a year, and the Clan grew desperate. The groups of hunters returned empty-handed, or did not return at all. What's worse is that many of these disappearances were accompanied by the sighting of a strange beast and massive paw prints on the forest paths that surrounded the village. At first glance, the tracks looked like they belonged to a bear, but the size of those tracks gave the impression that the beast was truly gigantic. The venerable clan shaman disappeared for several days, communing with the spirits in ways known only to him and his apprentice. When he returned, the old man announced that a terrible curse had befallen the village: a powerful beast, corrupted by the power of evil, roamed the forests in search of human flesh. He claimed that no mortal hand could slay such an enemy, but the young, hot-blooded warriors of the clan disagreed. Arne and Ulf rise to the forefront of this ambitious group. Inspired by the sagas of the great heroes, they no longer wanted to hear the shaman's warnings – their own legend was there, waiting to be forged, and their clan would not survive unless the monster was subdued. This is how the young people left for the forests, arming themselves with all the weapons they could find in the village. For fifteen days the warriors hunted, but their prey proved cunning. The monstrous bear avoided directly confronting the would-be killers. Instead, he attacked warriors who strayed from their families, dragging some of them into the dead of night, and dragging the Norr into a deadly chase through the thickest forest. The hunt seemed doomed, and the survivors were lucky if they managed to get out of the forest alive. But the brothers were not deterred by the adversity or the horrors their enemy inflicted on their group. They continued on their way, using all the hunting skills their father had taught them, to track the beast to its lair. Eventually they found her in the center of the forest, where the trees were gnarled and twisted by dark magic – that's where the bear had made its den. Finally cornered, he attacked Norr's hunters with all his fury, and slew several in the first brutal moments of the battle. But the brave warriors resisted this onslaught and attacked the beast with spear and bow. Although many others fell soon after, the fearsome bear also suffered. Eventually, only Ulf and Arne remained standing, bleeding from countless wounds inflicted by teeth and claws, but defying the enemy. As one, they attacked the beast, and while Ulf distracted it, Arne thrust his spear into the bear's black heart. With a final roar of fury, the bear collapsed to the ground, dead. It was then that the two brothers finally let their injuries take over and rested their backs against a mighty old oak tree. They knew that with their loved ones dead and their blood running out, they would not survive long. Neither Arne nor Ulf spoke out against this fate, for with the death of the monster, their clan was safe. They were about to entrust their souls to the Ancestors when a woman dressed in the purest white and gold appeared before them, her arrival heralded by a blinding light. The Arbiter, as the stranger called herself, revealed a terrible truth to them. While the brothers thought they had sacrificed their lives to kill the beast, the injuries inflicted on them were more serious than fatal. The curse of the beast ran through their veins, and in just one day they would wake up as bloodthirsty monsters. The Arbiter asserted that she could not stop the transformation, but that it was in her power to save the minds and souls of the brothers – in exchange for their service. At first furious and suspicious, Arne and Ulf had no choice but to listen and learn that this woman was the servant of Lumaya, the goddess of light, the mother of all Teleria. It was she whom the brothers were to serve, for their skill and willingness to sacrifice their lives for others marked them out as worthy champions. For them, the Arbiter had a very special mission in mind, as the winter lands to the north were under attack by legions of the undead and badly needed strong defenders…
