Vast and rich is the dwarven realm that lies beneath the Mountains of Despair, its halls of hewn stone and gold glittering with splendor in the light of myriad braziers. But the Mountains are ancient, their caverns stretch far beyond the domain of the dwarf king, into the bowels of Teleria, and many mysteries await in the shadows.
Among the dwarves, some seek these mysteries. These lunatics willingly abandon the safety of their holds and venture into the forgotten passages of the basement to live their hermit life. Most of them never gave a sign of life again. But for every thousand failures, there may be one who has enough strength to become a legend. Long ago, Brogni served the realm as one of the Rune Keepers, clerics charged with gathering and preserving the knowledge of the dwarves. He was wise and learned in the ways of history, a mentor to many of his young peers and an advisor to the reigning king at the time. But the deeper he delved into the legends of yesteryear, the more questions Brogni asked himself. He became obsessed with the origins of his race, the ancient cradle said to lie deep beneath the earth's crust, in the heart of the mountains. Finding no answer in the vast libraries of the capital, he promised himself to solve the enigma by himself. With his apprentices and loyal warriors by his side, Brogni left the realm of the dwarves and set out to explore the ancient ruins that lay beneath his feet. For years, his expedition scoured its way through the unknown depths, picking up crumbs of the past with every ruin they uncovered. The dangers they faced are too terrible to tell, and one after another Brogni's followers fell in battle, their remains buried with what little honor could be given them. Very soon, the old rune-keeper found himself alone, wandering in the darkness without any hope of salvation. It was then that he came across a cave where an emerald light shone. Gems of all shapes and sizes sprang from the walls, shimmering in the artificial light that pierced the darkness. In the silence of the underground world, a soft melody full of sadness and nostalgia called Brogni; mesmerized, he entered and followed the sound until it led him to a gargantuan crystal that sat in the center of the cavern. Her polished body pulsed with light, and the moan that had trapped Brogni's mind seemed to come from within. He sat there and listened to the song of the earth. Centuries had passed, and all memory of the rune-keeper Brogni had faded into dust. So there were no dwarves left alive to recognize the ancient warrior when he emerged from the depths to join his people in the battle against the demonic creatures. Yet they could respect his skill and his hatred of the invaders. With his mass of searing arcane crystals, the stranger struck down horror after horror, while the chants of spells he uttered enveloped the dwarven warriors in protective magic. Over time, Brogni revealed his name and his origins – in part – but he would not tell anyone of the marvels he had witnessed or the mysteries he had solved. For now, his only goal was to help the dwarves return to the surface and to ensure that the tainted creatures of Siroth could no longer threaten the underworld, and so he pledged himself to the new king of the mountain. Today, Brogni accompanies the dwarf host into the upper world. He is a strange creature, a cleric of an unknown religion who does not seem to want to convert others. For the moment. But regardless of the strange rituals he follows and his beliefs, it's clear that the Underpriest is no friend to the Demonspawn or their minions. For that alone, he is a valuable asset to those looking to further Lumaya's goals in Teleria.
