History of Mother Cybèle
Contradictions are rife within the Cult of K'Leth, and rarely more so than in the being known as Mother Cybele. As one of the oldest and most powerful Shepherds of Souls, she has played an essential role in the soul transfer of thousands of her fellow Revenant Knights, earning her renown as a guiding light even within the highest echelons of the Cult. To lower-level acolytes and novices, she is nothing less than the sect's matriarch: wise, benevolent and powerful.
Almost all Revenant Knights pose as heroes to the insignificant mortals they lure into the service of the Cult, the better to acquire fresh bodies for their own use in soul transmission. Most are merely parasites and corrupters.
Aware of their own nature, most Revenant Knights assume the same about Mother Cybele, believing that her matriarchal aura is a mere pretext for retaining her authority. This is probably true, but it's also possible that Cybele genuinely believes she knows what's best for the Cult.
Authority has always come naturally to Cybelle. Once High Priestess of Lumaya, she became disillusioned with the Goddess of Light while working alongside her self-proclaimed representatives in the Sacred Order. She witnessed their hypocrisy first-hand, and when a crusading force wanted to "purify" (i.e. pillage) one too many innocent villages, Cybelle took action.
She preached resistance to the villagers and helped them rise up against the arrogant knights. She herself killed the leader of the Sacred Order warriors with a blow from her mace. From that day on, she was known as the Red Priestess, a title she made her own by adopting an incarnate mask which she now wears at all times.
Cybele continued to preach against the Sacred Order, and while the latter tried unsuccessfully to remove her, she also attracted the attention of darker forces. Members of the Cult of K'Leth went to see her, claiming to be defenders of the rights of the people against fanaticism and indoctrination to such claims, but she saw the potential power of the Cult and believed, with a naiveté sustained by hope, that she could perhaps steer it towards the good it claimed to support.
And so, Cybele threw herself into the activities of the Cult and quickly rose through the ranks. She became apprentice to a Shepherdess of Souls and was soon conducting soul-transmitting rites herself. The process offered no certainty and was fraught with danger and the unexpected. However, Cybele had a perfect success rate with her ceremonies, treating each of the many soul gems in her care with a tenderness befitting a loving midwife.
She became the Cult's most sought-after Shepherdess of Souls. Truly, when she "gave sight" to souls in their new flesh, the Red Priestess became their "mother". Over the decades, her reputation became vital to her own identity as she came to value her place within the Cult more than her former intentions to lead the Revenant Knights to rectitude. She had discovered her true vocation, that of a shepherdess of immortality.
Such a position ensures that Cybele enjoys privileged access to the most powerful and freshest bodies for her own soul, ahead of even some of the highest-ranking members of the Cult. Those who envy her power whisper that she abuses it, and that this incarnate mask is a convenient disguise for the frequency with which she changes bodies.
Some even claim that she is addicted to transmission and slips into new flesh on an almost weekly basis. This is of great concern to the other Revenant Knights, who claim that bodies that might belong to them are taken from them, but Cybele's reputation is such that no one has challenged her publicly; until now.
Some claim that such claims are unfounded. Of course, Mother Cybele has made great sacrifices for the Cult, expending time and energy to ensure the safe transmission of other Revenant Knights while going to the battlefield when the Cult's assets find themselves seriously threatened. No one can dispute her dedication, nor the force and vigor of her speeches as she preaches to the Cult's acolytes, making good use of her oratorical skills as a former high priestess. Any designs she might once have harbored, such as using her membership of the Cult to do good, seem to have long since been swallowed up by her ongoing efforts to remain a master of soul transmission and ensure that the souls in her care enter their new bodies.
What's certain is that only the unwary and thoughtless openly denounce Mother Cybele within the Cult. Because even if she isn't the matriarchal figure she presents herself as, she's the only sure way for many Revenant Knights to pursue their jealously guarded immortality.
