History of Ruel Maître-Chasseur
Even among the narcissistic and pompous elite of the Dark Elves, Ruel has always been considered an eccentric. Rarely seen without his custom-made insect armor, he displays wild behavior and a disdain for the noble decorum that many of his peers still cling to.
Yet few can match him in the art of hunting and shooting, and those foolish enough to challenge Ruel quickly realize that they can neither run nor hide in the darkest parts of Durham Forest. Once the master hunter has picked up the scent of his prey, there is no escape.
Unlike most of the infamous warriors his species has produced, Ruel was born a commoner and did not enjoy a noble, pampered childhood with tutors and servants attending to his every need. His father was a sinister and cruel man who knew that his son would have to excel if he wanted to be anything more than another pawn for the nobles to sacrifice in their schemes.
Day after day, Ruel was pushed to his limits: forced to fend for himself against dangerous predators as soon as he learned how to use a bow and spear, abandoned deep in the woods with only his intelligence and knowledge of the terrain to rely on. As harsh and dangerous as this training may have been, it also transformed Ruel into an unparalleled killer.
By the time he reached adulthood, the future master hunter had already found his first protector. Ikoras, of the Ashblades, a well-known group of mercenaries, saw the potential in young Ruel and took him under his wing. It was a gamble that paid off as long as goodwill prevailed between the two men, but it also heralded Ikoras's downfall.
For years, Ruel served in the shadow of his benefactor, honing his already considerable skills until he earned his place as Ikoras's right-hand man. But Ruel knew all too well that in the cruel world of the Dark Elves, you were either the ultimate predator or a disposable servant. He eventually challenged Ikoras and killed him in single combat.
No one dared challenge Ruel's claims, and he became the leader of the Ashblades for years to come. Money flowed freely, spent on weapons, magical trinkets, and debauchery as soon as it was earned. But this life did not appeal to Ruel. One day, he left his comrades behind without a word and headed for the heart of Durham.
There, he disappeared for a long decade. When Ruel finally returned to his people, he was covered in scars, as wild as a great wolf, and just as instinctive. He no longer sought to enrich himself by solving the problems of a rich fool—his only concern was to find prey worthy of his talent.
Many monsters and renowned warriors met their deaths, unseen and unheard, until it was too late, and the legend of the Master of the Hunt grew. Wild stories spread, telling of an ancient shaman who had taught Ruel to transform himself into any creature he desired.
That is why, these fools claimed, he was able to track his victims without being seen, even in the brightest daylight. The truth, of course, was much simpler: Ruel's talent had been acquired through blood and tears, and through decades of brutal living that had taught him to conquer or die.
Yet the Master Hunter took it all in stride with sardonic humor. Once again, he ventured into the dark zone of the forest, where the flow of arcane winds spawned creatures both terrifying and majestic. But this time, Ruel wasn't after vicious black bears or deadly shadow stalkers.
Instead, he targeted beetles and twisted flies that grew to enormous sizes and could easily cut through a knight in armor with their stingers. Their chitin was almost impervious to steel, but even that was not enough to save the creatures from Ruel's deadly aim.
Upon his return, the master hunter asked the finest blacksmiths of the Dark Elves to craft him armor and a longbow from shells imbued with magical power. In his vanity, Ruel killed the masters as soon as they had completed his request, so that no one else would know the secret of his creation.
And so the story of the master hunter continues. Perhaps you will finally win his loyalty and put his evil prowess to use for a greater cause. But beware! Ruel serves only his own desires; he is a deadly enemy and an unreliable ally.
