Valkyrie's story
Of the tribes and peoples that inhabit the Dead Lands, the Norr are perhaps the culture that seems most out of place. Their original homeland lies far to the northwest, among the fjords, frozen cliffs, and tundra of the Telerian Arctic. Yet many of their clans and communities have been driven from their lands by the relentless march of "civilized" kingdoms. Some submitted and joined the growing ranks of Aravian subjects, others stood and fought until they could no longer. These daring few were forced to flee after years of bitter warfare, choosing life in the harsh eastern lands across the Valdemar Strait. There they had to adapt and fight for survival against deadly beasts, monstrous lizardmen, and rival tribes unwilling to share the limited resources of the desert.
It is no surprise that such harsh conditions have made the Norr even more belligerent, and that their culture has evolved towards the exaltation of the warrior, considered the absolute pinnacle of what men and women can aspire to be. It is in this proud and violent tradition that the Valkyrie was born, and from her earliest childhood, she gave her all in the great fight of life. Nothing had ever been given to him, the Clan was very attached to his offspring fighting, sometimes even for the bare necessities. But she fought. No matter the difficulties, no matter the opposition.
This is what has shaped the spirit and morals of the Valkyrie, making her a tough warrior determined to defend the few people she can call her own. But these difficult experiences have also made his blood boil with dark envy whenever the object of his desire is in the possession of another. This envy often dominates her, for good or ill, and can just as easily fuel an undeserved contempt as direct a just hatred against those who oppress the weak. When Kephale Chassiana of Aravia – one of the leading Elven nobles – sought to expand her influence over the coastal regions of the Krokhan Desert, she did so with overwhelming force.
Having a stronghold on the other side of the Valdemar Strait would have allowed him to control and pass through his territory the trade between the nomadic tribes of the East and Aravia, and to benefit from the riches that flowed from it. The inhabitants were little more than a nuisance, whom Chassiana wished to see exterminated or driven out by force of arms. With the highly disciplined soldiers under his command and a number of Orc mercenaries, the forces of Kephale advanced swiftly and ruthlessly. Chassiana was ready to celebrate her success and sent a letter worded in typical Elven fashion, demanding that all local clans bow to her or vacate the huge tract of land she had claimed as her own. When the messengers reached the Valkyrie Clan, the response to their ramblings was swift and brutal.
Having become a warrior respected among her own, Valkyrie ordered the execution of the Elven messengers and the return of their skulls to their Kephale. Such an insult would not go unanswered from the proud High Elves, and the Norr prepared for battle. If they fought alone, defeat would be inevitable, but the Valkyrie wasn't that stupid. Instead, she sent her own messengers to gather several tribes and clans under her banner – neighbors, friends, rivals, remnants of the small communities demolished by Chassiana's army. It's not a feat that could have been accomplished under normal circumstances, but the disunited peoples of the Western Krokhan Desert now had a common enemy. And a motivated leader to unite behind.
In a pitched battle, the barbarian forces, savage and distrustful of each other, had little chance of winning a decisive victory. The Valkyrie knew this well and mounted a brutal raiding campaign that harassed the supply caravans and Kephale vanguard with unannounced attacks. They avoided direct confrontation for weeks, before one particularly daring attack finally lured the High Elves and their mercenary allies into a trap. Locked in a scorching desert valley in the Dead Lands, Chassiana and her soldiers soon found themselves beset from all sides, harassed and unable to mount a decisive offensive. Dozens of people perished in the quicksand, which the Barbarians were able to avoid thanks to their knowledge of the terrain.
And when the opportunity to crush the bulk of the horde finally presented itself, Chassiana ordered a charge that gave up all caution. It was exactly what the Valkyrie had been waiting and preparing for all this time. She led an energetic defense in person, supported by nomadic skirmishers hidden in the dunes until the opportune moment, then turned it into a counterattack that routed the High Elves and defeated them soundly. Kephale Chassiana survived, his expansionist ambitions ruined along with his reputation in Aravia. And though the alliance of barbarian clans did not last, the Valkyrie's leadership and savage skill have gone down in legend.
Unbeknownst to him, higher powers were watching the war ravaging the Dead Lands. Shortly after the victory feasts were over and the honored dead were burned at the stake, Valkyrie had a vision: a woman who called herself the Arbiter approached her. Although her motives in the recent battle were far from selfless, the Arbiter recognized Valkyrie's skills and offered her eternal life in exchange for her service to Lumaya. Although the Valkyrie wasn't quick to trust this stranger, a show of the Arbiter's power was enough to make her realize the gravity of the situation – and the fact that she wasn't given a choice, not really. But with the promise of glory and immortality, as well as worthy enemies to fight, the Valkyrie was finally convinced and consigned her soul to the Shard handed to her by the Arbiter. Thus began her service as the champion of Teleria.
