Saito's story
Saito was once captain of the guard of Shoji Bao, a great warlord from one of the lost islands to the east. Zealous and diligent in his duties, Saito could have spent a happy life as a warrior without equal among his island people had it not been for Shoji's jealousy of Saito's martial talents and his mistaken belief that Saito had designs on his daughter.
Shoji organized Saito's assassination. While Shoji's daughter had fallen deeply in love with him, Saito had no intention of dishonoring his role as captain of the guard by running off to marry his warlord's daughter. Shoji lured him into the Forest of Razors before leaving him to face a dozen elite ninjatu killers, each a ruthless and experienced fighter.
Saito greeted this betrayal with fury. At the end of the battle, twelve decapitated ninjatu lay around him. But he too had been badly wounded, and he knew he wouldn't leave the Razorwood alive. With his last breath, he implored heaven not to let him die alone and forgotten, his name soiled by the lies Shoji was telling right now about his disappearance.
Something answered, although the result may not have been what Saito really wanted. As the bitter chill of death washed over him, he felt able to stand up, his strength returning. He discovered that it only threatened to leave him again if he sheathed his double katanas. But as long as he held at least one of them in his hand, it seemed that death itself was now afraid to take hold of him.
Saito returned to Shoji's clifftop castle, intent on exacting revenge on his treacherous warlord. When he made himself known, everyone was shocked by his appearance, none more so than Shoji. But despite the fact that her father's duplicity had been exposed, Shoji's daughter begged Saito not to kill him. Shoji's guards refused, simply raising their heels and leaving Shoji's fortress without another word. The warlord's reign soon came to an end, his authority unbound once his treachery was exposed. By this time, Saito was already far away.
The former captain of the guard roamed the lost islands for many years, the figure of the terrible armored warrior becoming a legend told by pirates and fishermen alike. For a long time, he appeared neither affable nor malevolent, but intervened when it seemed that treachery or infamy was about to take its course. Whether humble harbors under attack from pirate thieves or merchant shipments trapped in the sweltering jungle and beset by plundering Lizardmen, Saito would appear unannounced, kill the assailants and then disappear just as quickly, seeking neither favor nor service.
If Saito had indeed simply wished to maintain his honor in the afterlife, this noble intention became distorted over time. Overwhelmed by his immortality, exposed to the necromantic magics that prevented his body from dying completely, Saito saw his will harden into something cold and inflexible. He began to associate weakness with opprobrium, impotence with cowardice. He came to kill not only the aggressor, but sometimes also those he had once helped, regarding them as pathetic. He also became less reclusive, using undead warriors from rain-swept jungles and lonely coves where ships had been wrecked.
Saito is never seen without his elaborate heavy armor and, of course, his dual katanas, which now look as if they're burning with the golden soulfire of those he's slain. At his belt hangs the wicked-looking death mask that was once his rank badge as captain of the guard, but he wears it rarely now, keeping it only as a reminder of his past life when he goes into battle with his livid features exposed. He fights with cold, fearless precision, a razor-sharp whirlwind of death in which he can decapitate a host of opponents in minutes or slice through even the most fearsome beasts or monsters. Saito only lowers his wicked blades once the killing is done, and even then, he never sheathes them again.
No one knows if Saito will ever find a balance between mercy, justice and cruelty. Perhaps his will will forever remain cold and deadly, like the swords in his fists. The fact that he is never seen without them has led some people to assert that he can't give up his katanas even if he wished to, and that he is doomed to wander around Teleria forever, while others believe that he can only lay down his weapons once he has killed a worthy adversary or achieved some kind of inner peace. Whatever the truth, Saito's legend will undoubtedly live on for many centuries to come.
