History of Varl the Destroyer
Known for their ferocity, the Orc clans that roam the edges of Durham Forest have long since earned a reputation for being a menace to all who encounter them. They prey on travelers as brigands, or fight as mercenaries for those who can afford their services.
Among the bandit companies was that of a vicious Orc called Varl. Leading an alliance of Orcs and Skinwalkers, his infamy grew with every village he burned to the ground and every merchant convoy he destroyed with his flaming blades.
For many years, Varl's authority over his company seemed unshakeable, until an accidental encounter with an enigmatic Dark Elf mage. Seducing Varl with gold and information about the trade caravans traveling between Kaerok and Aravia, the Dark Elf won the orc leader's trust, only to have it shattered.
He charmed the Skinwalkers under Varl's command into obeying his will and becoming his slaves, then ordered them to mutiny. In a fit of bestial rage, they abandoned their posts and rushed into Durham Forest with him.
Furious at this deception, Varl ordered the rest of his gang to hunt them down. They plunged deep into the unhealthy woods, determined to bring down the Elf and the traitors.
Varl followed their trail like a hungry wolf. It was as if a red mist had descended on him as he made his way through thickets and brambles. But his rage was tempered by his intelligence, his desire to kill those who had betrayed him matched by his sharp tactical mind.
As his band gained ground on the traitors, Varl led them off the trail, passing them and their puppeteer while remaining concealed. They surrounded their prey in what looked like an abandoned Dark Elf bramble house.
Surrounded and desperate, the elf mage chanted a dark blessing and imbued his hypnotized Skinwalkers with unnatural speed, strength and ferocity. An exhausting, bloody battle ensued.
With their new supernatural gifts, the Skinwalkers made mincemeat of their former allies, and the Elf cast spell after spell to regenerate the wounds the Orcs inflicted on them. Varl realized that if he didn't act quickly, his remaining warriors would be destroyed.
Raising his flaming weapons into the air, Varl set fire to the surrounding trees, hoping that the fire would take hold of his enemies as it spread. The flames devoured the forest, greatly increasing the chaos.
In the frenzied melee, which quickly turned into a vicious panic, Varl slashed a pair of foaming Skinwalkers to pieces at brief intervals, before charging the Dark Elf, his rage taking control of his mind as the growing inferno swirled around him.
Faced with his ferocity and muscular mass, the mage was no match for him and was quickly decapitated. The severed head rolled in the flames and its pale skin was quickly scorched. Varl retrieved it and held the Elf's charred head aloft, letting out a terrible battle cry before ordering his remaining, badly wounded warriors to retreat.
The results of the fire went far beyond what Varl had anticipated. Although the bramble house had seemed abandoned, many Dark Elves lived in the trees above it. When the flames burst forth, the Dark Elves fled their burning homes, enraged by the destruction and invasion of their territory.
As Varl and his band fled, the Dark Elves attacked, their bows shooting poison-coated arrows, and wielding deadly long swords. In the space of a few minutes, they killed dozens of exhausted and surprised Orcs. Knowing that victory was impossible, Varl ran on, not slowing down until he had left the forest and reached the plains where he and his band had once roamed.
Only then did he look behind him, as blood poured from his many wounds. Only a handful of hobbled Orcs and Skinwalkers emerged from the trees, and he saw several of them fall, struck by black-studded arrows just as they thought they were safe at last. As clouds of smoke billowed into the darkening sky, Varl watched the slaughtered survivors of his company scatter. He was too exhausted, and too ashamed, to call out to them.
Only then did Varl earn the title of "Destroyer", for having brought about the destruction not only of a section of Durham Forest, but also of the band he commanded.
