Story of Yoshi the drunkard
Yoshi had always found the soldier's profession boring. Not the fighting, nor the smashed skulls—he always enjoyed that—but the discipline, the subordination to a haughty and powerful noble, the waking up at ungodly hours, all of that was intolerable! No, Yoshi was not cut out to be a soldier, and yet he was, fighting for his homeland against the fearsome Demonspawn.
He was young at the time, and despite all his complaints, he believed in the rebellion with all his heart. Despite numerous trials and tribulations, Yoshi remained courageous and sincere. And the Ancestors smiled upon him. He lived until the end of the war, celebrated the liberation of the Lands of Dawn, and enjoyed the spoils of victory. For a few years, Yoshi traveled the kingdom, feasting until his pockets were empty and starting fights for the simple pleasure of fighting.
Still wandering, Yoshi did not settle down, even after he had spent all his money. It was only when he found himself drunk, sleeping on the porch of a monastery on a cold spring night, that his fate improved. The monks of Shadowkin were all warriors, devoted to the study of martial arts in all their forms. So when an aggressive lout disrupted their morning rituals by demanding water and food to fill his belly, their response was as firm as one might expect.
The fight was brief. Yoshi emerged both impressed and humiliated, which was quite rare. The monks appreciated the raw talent they had seen in the fight and invited the intruder to join them. Yoshi seized this opportunity, as few people could boast of having beaten him so badly. Of course, it wasn't all plain sailing.
He had to relearn discipline, pull himself together, and control his baser instincts—a prospect that the merry fellow did not appreciate at all. Fortunately, the skills he studied at the monastery were a good compromise for these inconveniences, and the monks fed him well! Even today, Yoshi remembers his years at the monastery with great fondness.
But the thirst for adventure is an enemy that is not easily defeated, and Yoshi could not remain locked away in a cloister forever. He learned what he could, mastered his body, and finally bid farewell to his friends before venturing out into the world beyond the walls of the fortress. It was this same thirst for adventure that drove Yoshi to join the first Shadowkin who left the borders of their kingdom to travel westward to the other lands of Teleria, and many adventures awaited them along the way.
From the endless dunes of Krokhan, where Yoshi faced powerful barbarian heroes in single combat, to the great elven cities, he quickly became a legend among mercenaries and tavern patrons. Yoshi remains an enigma to outsiders, whose opinions of him range from admiration to disgust.
A man of strange origins, turbulent and cheerful—but quick to resort to violence—is certainly not the easiest guest for the city guards to handle. Although the strange spirits invoked by Yoshi are a source of great concern for traditionalist High Elves and Knights of Sacrifice.
