History of Gurptuk Moss-Beard (Gurptuk Moss-Beard)
Many ancient mysteries are buried in the trees of Durham Forest. Some are beautiful, others are dangerous, deadly, and best left in oblivion. Beasts, brigands, ruthless dark elves all prey on the unwary, and only the greatest adventurers can hope to survive if they stray from the beaten paths of the forest. Oddly enough, there's someone brave enough (or maybe crazy) to call the very heart of Durham home. Some say he is a nature spirit, a benevolent guardian of the woods whose cabin is always open for the lost and weary. Others swear he is a monster – hunger and malice having taken shape, still hungry for the blood of the innocent. One thing is certain. Whoever this creature is, its power is immense. So beware, O Summoner, for only the boldest can hope to unravel this mystery and recruit a new champion to their cause. Durham Forest is a place of ancient magic and mystery, where many dangers await the unwary who venture beyond its borders. Vicious predators and man-eating monsters roam the perpetual twilight that shrouds Durham, ruthless Dark Elves prey on travellers, and vile undead lair in the twisting thickets. But there is a clearing in the very heart of the forest, where an old hut stands. Neither beasts nor elves dare approach it, for they know that the lord of the house has little patience for unwelcome guests and is powerful enough to ensure that their transgressions will be punished in good and due form. No one, not even the oldest rulers of the Dark Elves, knows when and how Gurptuk the Moss Bearded ended up in Durham. For as long as anyone can remember, he was just there, making a living in the depths of the woods. Dozens of tales and myths surround his figure; some claim that Gurptuk is in fact a fay, a guardian of nature and the true ruler of Durham; others believe it to be a mad old shaman who has made a pact with dark forces to grant him immortality in return for terrible sacrifices he must make. Either way, Moss-Beard looks like an ogryn, though the wooden armor and amulets he wears may explain why he's mistaken for a forest spirit. His behavior doesn't fit a single pattern either, and while some talk about the Oreillard-Mousse helping lost travelers find their way back to the beaten path, others tell spine-chilling tales of people slaughtered and used. for obscure purposes unknown. But there are those who are bold enough or foolish enough to seek out Gurptuk, for he is said to be a wizard of immense power and his knowledge of poisons is almost unmatched. One day, an ambitious group of Dark Elf assassins wanted to rid their family of such a troublesome neighbor, and cover themselves in glory in the process. They watched Mossbeard from afar, plotting to bring him down. When they struck, they did so with ruthless cunning and swiftness, shooting poisonous arrows at the old druid in hopes of weakening him. But something went wrong. Although Gurptuk suffered numerous wounds, he did not fall as his would-be assassins expected, and did not even stumble. On the contrary, he laughs. And while his assailants looked at him in horror, he stood tall and proud, a cloud of noxious spores rising from the mushrooms that covered his body. Despite the poison coursing through his veins, despite the arrows in his limbs and back, Gurptuk the Mossbeard stepped forward and chanted in an unknown tongue, his staff sending out bolts of arcane energy that scorched armor as well as flesh. The assassins turned to flee, but there was nowhere to run or hide from Gurptuk's vengeance. One after another, they fell, without it being known exactly what painful fate had been reserved for them. After that night, a row of fresh skulls could be seen adorning the fence that surrounded his hut. As there were no survivors, rumors and speculation spread like wildfire, and Mossbeard's fearsome reputation grew. Today, even the most ambitious dark elf warrior knows he must leave the druid alone.
