Story of Baerdal Cruelhammer (Baerdal Fellhammer)
Once upon a time there was Baerdal Fellhammer, a brave and rambunctious warrior, always looking for a good fight to test himself. He may have been small, but only a fool underestimates a dwarf's strength. And, much to Baerdal's delight, the taverns of Teleria had no shortage of fools. So he fought, drank, gambled all he had won and enjoyed his carefree life. This wouldn't last. One of Baerdal's forays into the Forgotten Crypts ended in disaster. The ancient floors crumbled beneath his feet and the dwarf warrior found himself in catacombs far older than the tomb he was exploring. Baerdal had struggled for his life for days, beset on all sides by skeletal ghouls and malevolent wraiths, until he finally found the exit. This desperate battle, without rest or respite, had changed Fellhammer, and where a loud and cheerful fighter entered the tomb in search of glory, a paranoid and wary survivor emerged from his catacombs and descended into the grim forest of Durham. But all was not in vain. Using his courage and the might of his axe, Baerdal slew many impure creatures and made his way to a clearing where a strange light seemed to keep the undead at bay. Tired and injured, Baerdal collapsed at the edge of a pond with water as black as pure obsidian. He dreamed of spirits that gathered and danced around him, warding off the evil that would see him dead. Baerdal Fellhammer awoke to find that the Fey – Durham's guardian spirits – had given him a small portion of their power. Whether for his bravery or simply because they were forced to, their protection has remained with him to this day. *This champion's story was adapted from Murd's contest submission.
