History of Bivald de l'Épine
In the early days of the Sacred Order, much credence was given to Lumaya's forgiving abilities: how even the most wicked souls could be redeemed by her love and grace. Many believed that a tiny ray of her Light was enough to pierce the veil of ignorance blinding someone, and that troubled people would abandon their wickedness for piety and charity. Such was the case with a man called Jorvik because he only needed to feel Lumaya's kindness once to renounce his avarice and sins, to be reincarnated as Bivald de l'Epine.
Once a bandit king who terrorized the roads around Kaerok's Renaissance Lands, Jorvik was more mountain than man: determined, rugged and cruel. His band of cutthroats plundered every caravan they could find, stripping everyone of their possessions, whether merchants, pilgrims or noblemen. Local garrisons, lordly armies and even rival bandit groups tried to get the better of Jorvik, but his greed was only matched by his ferocity in battle, and he defeated them all.
The locals whispered that his hoard could make a dragon jealous and, if he wished, he could have toppled more than one of Kaerok's novice Free Cities with little effort. However, a chance encounter with a caravan of pilgrims, apparently identical to those he had attacked before, changed Jorvik's life forever.
This humble caravan carried no gold or valuable possessions to speak of. Its people were making the journey to the Renaissance Lands, where the Sacred Order had established a stronghold for those ready to absolve themselves of past sins.
Enraged by their lack of riches, Jorvik prepared to kill the pilgrims in cold blood, but an elderly man among them stepped forward, grabbed the bandit king's hand and looked him in the eye. Time has erased exactly what happened. Some say he was just an ordinary man, while others say he was one of Lumaya's Lightbearers disguised in mortal form.
Whatever the truth, Jorvik's face transformed as the man spoke softly to him. His eyes, it is said, changed from milky blue to inky black, and the white disappeared. The pilgrim spoke of Lumaya, and that whatever darkness was in Jorvik's heart, there was still time to repent.
Jorvik wiped away tears of blood, begging Lumaya to forgive him for his myriad crimes. He turned to his former friends and pleaded with them to pray for Lumaya's clemency. Most of them fled at the sight of their leader weeping blood and his death-black eyes.
Jorvik implored the old man and his fellow pilgrims for advice on how to right the wrong he had done. They asked Jorvik to accompany them to the Lands of Rebirth, where he could surely find the forgiveness he sought in Lumaya's service. His tears stopped.
Wiping the blood from his eyes, Jorvik accepted and followed the pilgrims into this valley of repentance. It was here that Jorvik was "reincarnated", his sins washed away by years of dedicated service and good deeds. He defended the pilgrims against bandits, spent hours reading the holy scriptures, thrashed unholy creatures and helped the villagers in their hour of need.
But Jorvik's crimes continued to torment him. He prayed, scourged himself and fasted, but to no avail: he couldn't rid himself of his unbearable guilt. He spent many moons examining what he could do to relieve his anguish, and came to many conclusions.
First he decided that he should always feel pain, so he crowned himself with a crown of thorns, which also acted as a constant demonstration of his penitence. Next, he covered his eyes because he wasn't worthy of looking at Lumaya's creations. He also decided to become a man of peace, not war, because he had killed enough. He took the name Bivald, that of a martyr of Lumaya famous for his refusal to shed blood that could pollute the Goddess' world, even if it cost him his life.
Bivald decided to become a protector of caravans entering and leaving the Renaissance Lands. While he always carried a huge, sumptuously decorated warhammer wrapped in spikes, he hoped he'd never have to use it. If bandits attacked, he hoped he could offer them kindness, mercy and the way out of the cycle of violence he'd been shown.
Bivald hoped that maybe, just maybe, by bringing souls to Lumaya, his guilt could be relieved. But if the raiders refused his offer, he only considered them worthy of death, as he had been before seeing the Light. Wielding his hammer in a deadly whirlwind, he obliterated his enemies, reducing them to nothing more than a paste of blood, broken bones and pulverized flesh.
