History of Cromax Sanglune (Cromax Moonblood)
The moon has always fascinated Aravia's elves. The veneration of its light formed the core beliefs of some of Aravia's moon cults. These beliefs were among those that Siroth manipulated under his disguise of the Awakened Dreamer, another tool with which he slowly pushed certain parts of Aravian society to work for his own interests.
Siroth cultivated the belief that moonlight was revealing; that it could be used to reveal the secrets of the universe to anyone wise enough to analyze the shadows it created. Many Elves went mad trying to divine the secrets of this lunar wisdom.
Cromax Sanglune is one of the few Elves who survived his search for the secrets of the moon with both body and mind intact, although opinions differ on the latter. Obsessed by the Awakened Dreamer's promises of ancestral wisdom, Cromax combed Teleria for anything that might enable him to commune with the shadows created by the moon. He searched forbidden places and made pacts with strange beings. He infused his flesh with pure stardust and fed on things from the shadows, but none of this was enough. The answers he sought seemed destined to remain forever out of reach.
Frustrated, he turned his attention to the great observatories built then abandoned by the Descendants of Dragon after the destruction of their empire during the Hellfire Age. These structures straddled the peaks of the Cloud Arrow Mountains, and it was said that from their star platforms, a skilled astromancer could see constellations otherwise invisible to the naked eye. Built and operated by Elves, Dwarves and Dragon Descendants, the observatories were considered places of prayer by some of the ancient lunar cults of the Elves, and it was thanks to the surviving scriptures of these cults, long since banished by the rulers of Arvia, that Cromax learned of their existence.
Cromax sought out these observatories to plunder them of any secrets they might hold. He climbed steep peaks, battling the cold and wind, as well as the sentinels of the Dwarves of the Celestial Iron Territory who guarded these peaks. These guards defended the secret passes leading to the observatories, for reasons known only to the Dwarves. Cromax's encounters with these warriors became so regular, and so bloody, that the Dwarves quickly placed a bounty on the Elf's head.
Mercenaries flocked to the Mountains of Arrow Cloud. Wherever Cromax went, he was attacked. But he refused to put an end to his quest and set his sights on the highest and oldest observatory, a site abandoned long before the others. The snippets of information he had gleaned about the place during his research told him little about what might have happened, except that the event had claimed the lives of the astromancers who worked there.
Cromax made the difficult climb up to the ruin, unaware that a group of bounty hunters had found his trail. His pursuers tracked him back to the observatory as the full moon rose and cast its silvery gaze over the broken shell of the observatory. Cromax was fascinated by the light, for it was much brighter than in any other place he'd been in Teleria, and the shadows it created were darker. Inside, the shapes of cosmic darkness danced.
He didn't notice my bounty hunters until it was almost too late. Forced to call upon the most dangerous forms of shadow magic to defend himself, Cromax found it reacted strangely, as if tapping into a source of power...that he couldn't control.
Nobody knows what really happened that night, except Cromax. What is known is that cold fire danced along the peaks of the Mountains of Arrow-Nuage and that the Elf who descended the mountain was not the same one who had climbed it. His features were hidden behind a mask belonging to one of the elven moon priests of yesteryear, and his manner was strange. The determined traveler had disappeared; in his place was a strange thing of moonlight and lunar cycles.
Cromax now roams Teleria, guided by the waxing and waning moon. He claims to be her emissary, although no one can really say what that means. Some think he's crazy, but everyone's savvy enough not to stand in his way...especially when the moon is full.
