History of Ithos
The high standards and demanding nature of the High Elves are their blessing and their curse. Legitimate pride is easily transformed into arrogance, and an Elf's naked self-esteem can well and truly become something to be feared. Snubbed by those he most respected and denied the title he was obsessed with, Ithos became a perverse example of the worst excesses of the High Elf mindset.
From an early age, Ithos wanted to become the Royal Hunter, one of the most prestigious titles available to the servants of Aravia's monarchs. The Royal Hunter is the crown's armed wing on its lands and abroad. His varied duties include hunting down fugitives, executing dissidents, spying and subterfuge. The Royal Hunter acts with almost total impunity, answering only to the monarch. Ithos dreamed of the glory of this title, and longed even more for the absolute freedom to act as judge and executioner of his people's enemies.
Although Ithos achieved excellent results in the various examinations and tests to which aspiring Royal Hunters are subjected, when skilful Aravian interrogators probed his mind, they discovered that he was too mentally unstable and egocentric to be truly suited to the role. They perceived his true desires: a license to injure and kill without consequence, unquestionable status and a veil of terror to wear. With the brutal contempt that many people believe is characteristic of High Elves, they told him point-blank that his character was unsuitable and that he was permanently disqualified for the role of Royal Hunter. Ithos took it badly.
He swore that his examiners were incompetent and that his talents were unrivalled, conjuring up plots against him in his fevered imagination. When another anonymous candidate was elevated to the status of Hunter, Ithos vowed to prove to the Aravian bureaucrats that he alone, and no other, was the greatest hunter in these lands and most deserving of the role. Without asking permission, Ithos embarked on a campaign of savage terror against those he perceived as the greatest threats and humiliations to the Kingdom of Aravia. Some were long-standing adversaries of the state, while others were simply those who stood in Ithos's way.
A prominent anti-Elfe propagandist of human lineage who lived in Arnoc thought himself safe in his high tower beyond the borders of Aravia. His lofty home exploded into immense flames that lit up the night sky like the noonday sun, entering its collapse and burning it to ruin. A trading company run by recalcitrant Dwarves failed to honor its word when making a deal with one of the Aravian merchant guilds. They discovered the president of their company beaten to a pulp, his limbs and organs scattered across the warehouse, his blood soaking and staining their precious inventory. An orc warlord who dared to raid Aravian caravans was hunted down and harassed until he went mad, even after he fled to the other side of Peltas to try to escape Ithos. Witnessing the murder of friend and companion, one after the other, by this seemingly all-powerful hunter, his spirit broke under the stress and grief, and the Orc fled babbling into the desert, where he perished to the elements. Other, more gruesome stories exist, too horrible to tell.
When the Aravian authorities heard of Ithos' mad quest to usurp the title of Royal Hunter, they were rather horrified. Some members of Aravia's Ministry of Justice, however, implicitly or openly approved of Ithos' activities. They argued in favor of the usefulness of an unofficial Chasseur, an undeniable asset whose objectives largely, but incompletely, overlapped with their own. Even if Ithos and his methods lacked the restraint and subtlety expected of a true Hunter. A lively debate ensued, but in the end the royal judgment fell against Ithos and his supporters. Whatever usefulness Ithos might have for the crown, the judges considered that it was not worth the ignominy of his actions and the likelihood that his twisted judgment would ultimately put innocent people, and even important figures, at risk.
Those who had examined Ithos were held responsible for his rampages, since it was they who had rejected him and subsequently released him back into the population when, in hindsight, they should have imprisoned him and his dangerously disturbed mind. With bitter irony, the real Royal Hunter was given the task of finding and arresting Ithos, the "impostor" Royal Hunter. A deadly game is now being played discreetly across Aravia, frequently crossing borders as Ithos wanders all over Teleria to carry out his delirious work. At the very least, Ithos may soon have the opportunity to compare his skills with those of his chosen replacement.
