Long ago, in the lands of Kaerok which did not yet know a king, there lived a great warrior named Kalvalax. He was not descended from any ancient line, but it was a time when a person's nobility was measured less by a long list of prominent ancestors than by the number of warriors they had under their banner. . Kalvalax had plenty. Gifted with both strength and cunning, he was unparalleled on the battlefield and led countless campaigns against the Orc tribes that populated the plains of Arnoc. He razed their rudimentary encampments and put to the sword all who dared resist him. Within a decade, a vast swath of land had been freed from the savages, and the fledgling city bestowed a duke's diadem on Kalvalax, to whom it owed its newfound prosperity. This is how his reign began: in blood, fire and ruthless conquest. Many of the bold attempted to take the duchy from Kalvalax, only to meet an untimely death as its fame – or infamy – grew. The more his enemies perished under the blade of Kalvalax, the more he was convinced of his immortality. But hubris is often deadlier than the cruelest of monsters.
Misfortune did not take the form of an invading army or a raging dragon, but of a disease that many sages consider divine punishment for Kalvalax's arrogance, or an ancient curse. which he unwittingly invoked. The plague swept through Arnoc like a tidal wave. Kalvalax himself did not escape the unseen miasma of decay. He fell ill and grew weaker day by day, unable to fight this invisible enemy as he had fought those who challenged his power. Desperate, he prayed for his salvation and swore to pay any price, no matter how high. And a dark and ancient force heard his prayers. A stranger arrived in Arnoc that fortnight – an old man shrouded in black robes and shadow. He walked through the streets, unafraid of the plague, and arrived at Kalvalax Castle to offer a solution to the misfortune that threatened the city. All he asked in return was the duke's cooperation and the sacrifice of innocent blood. The citizens of Arnoc were then as desperate as their sovereign and eagerly followed the instructions of the prophet. Dozens of people were brought to the altar like sheep and killed, as Kalvalax looked on, in armor and full costume.
As the sacrificial chalice overflowed with blood, waves of arcane power tore through the city. The chronicles describe clouds of plague being swept away by the wind of the hurricane and carried to the castle, where the mad prophet channeled them into the body of Kalvalax and sealed all the city's misfortunes there. No one can say what happened next to the duke. Some say he perished that day. Others say it was a ploy by the cult of K'leth - the Returning Knights - and that Kalvalax had fallen into their hands. One thing is certain, the legend of a nightmarish knight, clad in ancient armor oozing pestilence, emerged soon after, and few who witnessed this walking horror and lived to tell it...
