There's probably no tavern as famous or as beloved in the entire dwarf kingdom as the Stout Oak Inn, which sits comfortably just a few blocks from the capital's main square. And Maulie Tankard, the ever-cheerful barmaid whose smile dazzles even the gruffest dwarf, has played an important role in maintaining the reputation of her beloved establishment.
Indeed, it's hard to find a more cheerful and optimistic young lady. Maulie knows when to pour the beer and tell an anecdote that will make the customers laugh, and when to get them into a good old-fashioned tavern brawl. But when the dust settles and the broken furniture is thrown out, everyone is back to drinking, singing and praising their hostess. Life would have gone on at the same merry pace had it not been for the demonic invasion of his homeland.
For a while, the Stout Oak was silent, no songs were sung within its walls, no competitions or drinking games were held. Instead, the dark soldiers of the King's Guard took refuge inside. When the demons attacked, using their wings or black magic to break through the city walls, the inn was also taken by storm. It was then that Maulie Tankard showed her courage.
When a monstrous hound knocked down the captain of the guard and nearly tore his throat out with its jaws, it was Maulie who saved his life. Grabbing a huge fork - one of the sausages she was cooking was still impaled on the tines - she charged the beast and brought it down with a single, precise blow. Emboldened by her example, the dwarf warriors counter-attacked and drove the demons back.
Once the siege was lifted, the captain found Maulie and presented her with a master's hammer - one of the oldest symbols of Dwarf warriors - commissioned in the image of that fateful fork. Though purely symbolic, the hammer was a powerful weapon, and Maulie would have none other when the lure of adventure finally drew her from her tavern to the surface. Where some seek fame and fortune, Maulie Tankard wants nothing more than good stories to tell on her return, and new recipes to spoil her regulars.
