History of Minaya
Once upon a time, a disaster struck the kingdom of Kaerok. Year after year, abnormal drought prevailed, crops withered and livestock fell for lack of pasture. Thousands of people died, tens of thousands more suffered greatly. Lords and peasants experienced hunger and despair. Few lands in all of Kaerok remained untouched by famine – and the domain of Marquis Khoronar was one such haven. But the marquis was arrogant, selfish and mean. One night, a malnourished old woman came to the castle and offered Khoronar a beautiful rose in exchange for some food that would keep her alive. Disgusted by her pathetic and destitute appearance, the Marquis sneered and ordered the old woman thrown out the door. But before the guards could lay a hand on her, they were struck by lightning and their flesh turned to marble. The old woman's appearance shifted and swirled to reveal her true form, angelically beautiful, with noble and austere features, and hair the color of a fiery flame. Recognizing the Arbiter for what she was, Khoronar tried to beg his forgiveness, but it was too late for she had seen his ugly and selfish nature hidden under a veneer of nobility. To punish him, the Arbiter turned him into a hideous beast and bound his soul to a shard so he could never truly die. Thanks to a powerful spell cast on the castle, Khoronar was sentenced to eternal life as a prisoner. He would only be freed from his curse if he learned to love. But over the centuries, the Marquis and his castle have been forgotten, lost in the depths of the enchanted woods. It seemed like Khoronar was doomed to an endless cycle of misery with no redemption or love. It is only with the arrival of a young knight from Kaerok, Minaya, that hope is finally reborn. Renowned for her kindness and beauty, Minaya was well-liked by her subjects and peers. But some were jealous of her, and others were bitter at her refusal to court her. A proud baron whose advances Minaya had spurned saw it as an insult that could only be washed away by blood. He sought allies among those who could not bear to see the virtue of the young knight, and soon an assassin's arrow was about to pierce Minaya's heart. By the grace of the goddess, the assassin missed his target and Minaya escaped into the woods. For hours she wandered, and as wolves gathered behind her in hopes of finding easy prey, she finally stumbled upon the enchanted castle where the cursed Marquis lived. Khoronar intended to punish the intruder first. But seeing Minaya's beauty and the courage she showed even in the face of the horrible beast he had become, he stopped his anger. He still imprisoned Minaya, as she now knew the way to the castle, but treated her fairly. Her servants, doomed to an existence of living statues, catered to Minaya's every whim, and every evening Khoronar, desperate for companionship after centuries of loneliness, dined with her. Gradually he realized that he was falling in love. Terrified by the idea, he flew into a fit of bestial fury and chased Minaya from the castle, ordering her never to return. It had almost cost the life of the young knight, because the assassins sent after her had not given up. By bad luck, they ran into Minaya again and would certainly have gotten the better of her if Khoronar, remorseful for his deed, had not followed Minaya in the hope of obtaining her forgiveness. He ran into the assassins just as the ambush was set and managed to kill them all in the ensuing battle. But Khoronar did not emerge unscathed from the fray, and a poisoned arrow hit him in the shoulder. Minaya rushed to her side and used all her skills to heal the wound and purge the poison from her savior's blood. Weakened but alive, Khoronar and his companion returned to the castle. It was then that their feelings came to fruition, and Minaya looked past the gruesome facade to see a man who was repentant and eager to improve. She did her best to guide him, to teach him that it was only in the love of others that Lumaya's blessings could flow. Yet her people's thoughts did not leave Minaya, even when her own happiness was at hand. Although reluctant, Khoronar allowed him to visit his own domain and ensure that a suitable squire could be appointed to rule fairly in his place during Minaya's absence. She promised to return in a week and left the castle again. Upon her arrival, Minaya found that her lands had been invaded by the jealous baron whose proposal she had refused, and that her people were being bled dry and oppressed by new draconian laws. Furious at the abuse, Minaya called on whatever allies she could to aid her, and the people of the land rose to stand by their Lady with whatever weapons they could afford. The siege promised to be bloody. Meanwhile, Khoronar was distraught: the week had passed and Minaya still had no sign of life. He thought he was betrayed once again and nearly fell into despair if there hadn't been a miracle. Although all the mirrors in his castle had long since been smashed, shards of glass were still strewn about his room. One came to life, glowing with arcane energy, and showed a stunned Khoronar the terrible sight of his love dying in battle. Abandoning everything, Khoronar hastened to the lands of Minaya. He arrived when the assault on the castle was already underway and threw himself into the fray. Impressed by the arrival of such a powerful and strange ally, Minaya's men-at-arms could only yield to the enraged beast. But alas, it is perhaps this precipitation which allowed the prophecy of the mirror to come true. After breaking into the great hall of the castle, Khoronar came across Minaya who was fighting against the Baron's personal guard. Seeing Minaya's reaction, the usurper raised his crossbow and unleashed an enchanted arrow that was to kill Khoronar. But Minaya threw herself forward and took the blow instead of her beloved. As his body fell to the ground, Khoronar flew into a fury he had never known. Ignoring wounds and pain, he stalked his foes and only stopped when they had all fallen before him, and the traitor Baron's sword was finally broken. It was only then that Khoronar fell to his knees and wept over Minaya's body. His grief was so strong that he only realized he was no longer alone when a hand rested on his shoulder and his eyes were met with a blinding light as he turned around. The Arbiter had come down to the battlefield in person and sought out Khoronar. She revealed to him that she had watched him closely and that his selfless actions were enough to earn his forgiveness. What happened next is subject to interpretation and speculation in the different versions of the story… The Arbiter is known to have used his power to bring Minaya back to life, which allowed her and Khoronar to share, kiss and confess their love. Then, according to some, Khoronar's bestial form disappeared and he became human again. He and Minaya got married and lived happily ever after. But some storytellers insist the story doesn't end there. The Arbiter would have canceled the curse, but would have warned Khoronar that the suffering he had inflicted could only be repaid by a service. Unable to bear being separated from her love, Minaya in turn pledged herself to the Arbiter and bound her soul to a Champion Shard of her own free will. This was how Khoronar and Minaya would spend eternity together, while being called upon to fight on Lumaya's behalf when the need arose - a price they were both more than willing to pay.
