Nethril's History

Once a leading authority at the Academy of Western Anhelt, Nethril saw his life changed, and ended, forever when he made a dark pact with the Shadow God, Siroth. For years, Nethril had been working on his magnum opus, a vast, multi-volume history of Teleria, including everything from flora and fauna to geography, cultures and events, from the Grey Age to modern times. It had become an obsession that consumed him every day and most of every night, so much so that he sought elixirs and spells that would supposedly enable him to live without sleep.

Eventually, Nethril's life began to decline, eroded by the efforts of his perpetual work. It was while researching the nature of the Undead that he had a revelation. Time was no concern to someone who was already dead. Why meddle with the palliative solutions of trivial magic, seeking to work all night or extend his life by just a few years, when immortality was within reach?

Nethril set off in search of the Undead, plunging into depths no honest scholar should explore. Finally, having found what he was looking for, he took up his ceremonial staff of high authority and implored the dreaded Siroth. He made an unusual proposal: an eternity of service if the divine could only offer him the so-called Curse of the Incarnate Hunger.

Siroth remained silent and Nethril received nothing. He made many horrible attempts to curry his favor, ending up poisoning an entire cohort of new students. Finally, Siroth spoke to this aspiring acolyte. The Dark God granted Nethril the Hunger, even going so far as to magically engrave the Mark of Eternal Bleeding Blood, one of his seals, on Nethril's torso. Immortality would be his, Siroth promised, in exchange for his service and a single promise: Nethril would remove all trace of Siroth from his history book.

Nethril accepted and returned to his transformed studies. The realities of morality no longer burdened him. He didn't need sleep or food. He discovered he could work for days on end. The only burden was the need for blood, which the Incarnate Hunger required if he wished to retain any semblance of his former self. He quickly conquered these desires. Such an irresistible need was negligible compared to the addiction to his work.

The arrangement couldn't last. Nethril's changes, namely his nocturnal habits and strange lack of appetite, drew the attention of colleagues already baffled by his unnatural conscientiousness. When his secret was discovered, he was driven from his quarters, and all his work was seized and thrown on a pyre built in the square courtyard of the Academy. Nethril's fury was unleashed when he saw the very reason for his existence go up in smoke. He slaughtered most of the Academy's scholars, but failed to save his scrolls. Covered in blood, he grabbed only his staff and fled.

Nethril swore an oath that would bind him forever to the path of corruption. If the living cared so little for their own history, he would end history himself. He would ensure that the Undead would triumph over the living, and change itself would cease. Therefore, at least according to Nethril's reasoning, there would be no more history. Kings would reign forever, necropolis cities would stand as eternal monuments, and there would be no more births to record, no more deaths to register. The destruction of Nethril's work was no loss, he realized, for even if it had been "finished", it would have been in vain anyway, since there would always be more events to transcribe. Using this twisted logic, Nethril resolved to exterminate all life.

Thus, a once eminent scholar became a ruthless mortal hunter. He modified his staff into a Harvest Cane, which is not only a deadly weapon, but also a powerful center of necromantic arts.

Death has become Nethril's new obsession. To pursue it, he possesses not only his sharp mind and wicked scythe, but also a link with the creatures of the night. Swarms of hungry bats and wolves do his bidding, helping him to stalk his prey and ensure that not a shred of flesh remains on the bones after the kill, leaving the skeleton ready for resurrection.

Nethril's vast knowledge makes him a valuable ally for the Undead. His goal is the destruction of the living, and he knows this is not something he can achieve alone. To those who don't fight the erudite Undead, Nethril may appear wise and even charming, but this is a veneer covering his eternal bitterness. His twisted quest has been the cause of countless deaths, and will continue to be until everything is as still and silent as a grave.
