Story of Queen Eva (Queen Eva)
Long ago, the High Elves and the Dark Elves were one people: the Elves of Aravia – the oldest and most powerful kingdom in Teleria. But after centuries of proud resistance against the forces of darkness during the Age of Hellfire, a spirit called the Dreamwalker has dismantled everything. He spoke to countless Elves in their sleep, promising them power, knowledge, beauty and truth. He gave them magic and wisdom, but it was all flawed. Over time, the Dreamwalker's gifts turned to poison, and when the Arbiter arrived in Aravia, she saw that it was Siroth's doing.
The then King of Aravia summoned the first-ever Conclave of Elves, but his attempts to suppress the followers of the Dreamwalker only alienated them. A war ensued, pitting the King's loyalists - the High Elves - against those who followed the Dreamwalker - the Dark Elves. Decades of brutal violence only ended with a second intervention by the Arbiter, this time with an army at his side. She imposed a second Conclave of Elves, but it failed to unite the Elven people, only separating the two camps: the High Elves in Aravia, and the Dark Elves in nearby Durham Forest.
This act was supposed to end the war of the Elves. Instead, he only changed the flavor. The conflict between Aravia and Durham lasted more than a hundred years. The fighting sometimes took place in the shadows, sometimes on the ground, but the violence and hatred never ceased. Yet we never came close to all-out war, until the King of Aravia was killed during a punitive expedition to Durham. If a warmonger had succeeded to the throne of Aravia, the violence would have been terrible… but instead, the next monarch was his daughter, Eva. Queen Eva had often dreamed of a world without war between the High Elves and the Dark Elves. His response to this incessant fighting was two-fold: the construction of a great wall and the holding of a new Conclave. These two measures would have the effect of changing the course of the war again.
The wall was meant to end the cycle of violence. He wouldn't be guarded by High Elves, but by Ogryn and Skinwalker auxiliaries – second-class citizens in the eyes of the High Elves, and so their deaths while defending Aravia wouldn't anger his people so much. In the meantime, the Conclave would allow dialogue between the High Elves and the Dark Elves for the first time in centuries.
This wall was known by the name of its designer, Felwin, and its construction had the expected result, but not the great Conclave of Queen Eva. Most of the talks boiled down to shouting and blaming, and there was little cooperation. Other conclaves were held – dozens over the years – but unity remained elusive; indeed, Queen Eva had more than once to face the assassins of the Dark Elves and even of her own people. However, the skill of his guards and his own courage prevailed over his foes, and over the decades the Elves of both kingdoms came to regard Conclaves as preferable to battles. It was a victory, even if it was incomplete.
However, with time and age, the queen fears that time will rob her of her victory. If real peacemaking were to take longer than his life, a more militant successor could quickly undo all his work. Queen Eva's quest took a more desperate turn and she ended up reaching out to the Dreamwalker.
Queen Eva discovered that the secret spirit was more than happy to teach her what he knew. But of course, as in ancient times, the lessons of the Dreamwalker had a poisonous side. He turned Queen Eva's despair, measure after measure, into paranoia. Peace remained his mission, but the Dreamwalker spoke of a conspiracy, and the increasingly desperate queen believed him. In his mind, his enemies multiplied rapidly, first within the Elven courts, then in the kingdoms of his neighbors. Peace with Durham would no longer suffice. All of Anhelt had to be tamed.
It was at this point in history that King Tayba of Kaerok shattered centuries of peace and attacked his former allies in the Free Cities. This was precisely the provocation the Dreamwalker had warned of. At Queen Eva's furious command, the Aravia struck Kaerok with all its might, disregarding the alliances. If Queen Eva could not persuade the powers of Anhelt to accept peace through diplomacy, she would bring it by the edge of the sword.
