Story of Rae (Rae)
The Oracles de la Somnolence are a sect of Dark Elves who provide a glimpse into the future, although their "visions" often raise more questions than they answer. Raé was born into this cult and, as a child, her visions concerned such things as when the rain would pour down or when a hungry predator might attack. Raé's premonitions were different from the abstract "knowledge" possessed by Oracles. Hers was tangible and real. Raé possessed true prescience. The Oracles feared that Raé's gift would render them obsolete, and several of them claimed to have "seen" that Raé represented a danger to the cult as a whole.
Raé's mother, Masama, needed no foreknowledge to see what the Oracles were planning. Following an instinct foreign to most Dark Elves, she slipped away with her daughter and into the wilds of Durham Forest before the Oracles could strike. Masama set off with nothing but the clothes on her back and her precious bone knife, relying on Raé's prescience to keep them out of danger. Eventually, Raé's dreams led them to a hut perched on an endless patch of twisted brambles, out of reach of the Oracles. For years, they were safe there.
On a day that began like any other, Masama went to wake her daughter, only to find Raé still deep in her dreams. While Raé needed to rest, Masama left the hut to search for food on her own. When she returned, Raé was still asleep, her blanket soaked with sweat. Masama did what she could, but she was no healer. As night fell, she began to panic. Raé was still asleep. Masama left her daughter to seek help.
While Raé slept, she saw everything. Masama's every step was a thread woven into a tapestry of certainty. Her path would lead to her death. In her dream, Raé shouted warning after warning to her mother, who couldn't hear her. Helplessly, she watched her mother enter a nearby canopy-town. She saw the flickering of dresses, a notched arrow, her mother's eyes as her death approached.
When Raé opened her eyes, she was alone in their hut. Grief swallowed her like an inferno. She desperately wanted it to have been just a terrible dream. The pain drove her to the brink of madness. Frustration bubbled under her skin, and no cry or tear could free her from it. She destroyed what little furniture she owned, threw the trinkets she'd collected over the years against the wall and pounded the floor with her fists. But the rage she felt towards herself would not subside. She realized that she was the reason they had fled the Oracles, she was the reason her mother had been killed. Raé didn't stop until she came across her mother's knife. In a fit of madness, an idea formed in her mind. Her visions were her enemy. She decided to do what, in her childlike mind, would prevent them from ever returning. She clutched her stomach, raised the blade and plunged it into her eye, intending to remove the next one immediately afterwards.
But the moment the tip of the knife pierced her eye, Raé received a vision more powerful than any she'd received before. Inside, she found herself in frozen wastelands that, curiously, instinctively, she knew to be the Winter Lands, shivering in snowdrifts as mountains towered above her. Within the snow squalls were silhouettes, shadows moving inexorably towards an unknown destination. Before she could test the snow with her eyes, the vision vanished. She had to get back there. She had to see more. She had to know if what she'd seen was real.
Raé left her life behind after gouging out her eye, all thoughts of piercing the second one forgotten. She walked briskly to the nearby canopy town and found the Oracle's assassin in an uneasy sleep. In one swift movement, she sliced his eye. To her surprise, her vision returned. The wasteland. The white mountains. The silhouettes, a little closer. When the vision vanished, the man lay dead before her.
Since that day, Raé has sought to reveal the mystery of her visions. She sold her knowledge of the future, paid, with the proceeds, to educate herself in dark, icy magic, and slowly traveled north. Still bitter from her life of suffering, she is a ruthless being who kills long before she speaks. She's determined to learn the truth about the beings who walk in the snowstorms of the Winterlands. It's the only goal she has left.
