History of Rathalos l'Epeiste
For many Lords of the Banner, hunting is nothing more than a social event: an outdoor spectacle to show off their white steeds, use the animals in various ways across their ancestral estates, then retire to the lodge for an evening of entertainment. However, there are many for whom the visceral thrill of the hunt is the reward, rather than the suckling pig that later graces the feast table.
A hunting group composed of such Lords of the Banner is the Brotherhood of the Golden Horn. In order to be admitted into this centuries-old alliance, a potential member must present the horn of a large beast to prove their worth.
A simple deer antler or bear claw is not enough: aspiring Brothers must present the appendage of a creature at least twice their size, whose roar could freeze the blood of a hunter.
A hunter might have to venture far and wide to find this kind of creature, and that is how Galfric, a fellow hunter and aspiring Brother, found himself on an expedition to the sweltering heat of the lost islands south of Tétrélia. Galfric was on the trail of a volatile, fire-breathing creature with red scales; a monster that had apparently never been seen in Tetrelia before.
Rumors had it that the great monster had emerged from a rift in reality itself in the forests of Kaerok, before flying off to Volanger to wreak havoc. Galfric paid for passage on the first ship he found heading south. and at any moment, the monster from another world would appear, only to discover that many of his fellow initiates had had the same idea.
As the ship sailed further south, one of the hunters on board spotted a plume of smoke rising from one of the islands. Convinced that this was a sign of the monster, he demanded that the captain head there. When the ship was close enough to the coast, Galfric jumped off the boat and rushed ashore, diving alone into the depths of the suffocating undergrowth.
Sweat poured from every pore of his skin as he cut his way through the brush, following a trail of giant footprints, claw marks, and fallen trees. But instead of finding his prey, Galfric discovered something that shocked him a little less: a small talking cat, standing on its hind legs and dressed in a remarkable array of hunting gear.
He too seemed to be inspecting tracks, jotting down notes in a tiny notebook and continuing to advance into the jungle. At first, Galfric thought it was a mirage, the first symptoms of a tropical disease. His confusion only increased when the cat began to speak.
With great eloquence and confidence, the cat introduced himself as Palico: a hunter's assistant in his own world, who had accidentally traveled here from a world called Tetrelia. He had followed a trail of glowing flies from his world and ended up finding something he called a Rathalos.
Galfric listened attentively, noting the Palico's wisdom and advice on how to kill this Rathalos. As he understood the creature's instructions, the terrifying description of the beast facing Palico, with its long claws, sharp tail, and fiery breath, left no doubt that his current long sword, slightly rusty, would be no match for this monster.
He asked if the Palico would follow him to where the ship had anchored, as he believed his compatriots would have had time to set up camp there. The Palico agreed, and the two of them set off on the long trek through the jungle, sharing stories of hunts past.
When they arrived, Galfric begged the Palico to remain hidden, because one of the worst masters was turning the skin of a talking feline into a means of entering the Brotherhood. Galfric ran to the expedition's makeshift forge, begging the blacksmith to forge him a weapon capable of piercing the skin of the formidable monster the Palico had told him about.
Seeing Galfric seemingly overwhelmed by the heat of the jungle, the blacksmith asked no questions and set to work to fulfill Galfric's request. After working through the night, the blacksmith presented Galfric with the weapon he needed.
The insider quickly returned to his animal companion, and they set off, venturing deeper into the island's dense vegetation, following a trail marked by glowing green flies which, as the Palico assured him, would lead the way to Rathalos.
After several hours, they were still searching. Galfric and the Palico finally came across what appeared to be the tracks of other people. Not those who had traveled with Galfric to the lost islands, but who were clearly in pursuit of the monster.
Not wanting to be beaten, Galfric and the Palico began to run at full speed, the thrill of the chase energizing their tired muscles as they leaped over branches and stumps.
As they ran, they could hear roars, cries, and the clash of swords in the distance. Their prey was close. So was Galfric's chance to become a legendary swordsman.
