History of Razelvarg
In the land of Yakai, there are many characteristics and properties associated with rabbits and hares. They are considered bringers of good fortune, and their rapid reproduction makes them symbols of fertility. Various celestial bodies are associated with them, and countless stories tell of how they arrived in Teléria from stars, planets, or constellations high in the sky.
In other territories, hares are naturally raised for their meat and fur, but in Yakai, there are more cultural practices and rituals associated with tracking, trapping, and killing them. Since they are considered to bring good luck, it is customary for Yakai hunters and trappers to pay a symbolic «hare price» when they kill one.
The prize is usually a handful of grain or vegetables, left in places frequented by hares. As well as functioning as a spiritual ritual, feeding the creatures helps to ensure that their population remains robust enough for other hunters to enjoy.
Raas Zal'far was a human from Anhelt who had settled in the foothills of the Cloudspear Mountains, on the border of Yakai. A hunter and trapper, when he learned of the traditions and superstitions of the region's inhabitants, he mocked them.
Unaware of the traditional price of the hare, he killed as he pleased, despite protests from the local inhabitants. But those who kill animals for sustenance are particularly at risk of contracting the curse of the Skin Walkers, and those who take more than their share are at even greater risk because they tempt fate much more frequently.
One day, this was Raas Zal'far's fate as he cut his catch and a violent hare spirit, driven by the touch of Darkness, attacked his soul. Rich fur similar to that which he had long enjoyed appeared on his skin, his ears grew skyward like ears of corn, and his body and musculature became painfully deformed.
Raas's mind and soul battled vigorously with the essence of the hare, and this transitional period of mental anguish and physical pain lasted far longer than usual for a newly-affected Skinwalker. For weeks, he wreaked havoc in the woods, spluttering and screaming, spreading terror among the local inhabitants. Stories spread about this mad man-beast and his rampages, and the constant repetition of his name eventually turned him into Razelvarg.
Although his violent inner struggle to integrate his beast-self finally came to an end, Raas's mind had become twisted and scarred, making him a vicious lunatic. He attacked farms and feasted on their crops, needing enormous quantities of food to maintain his huge, fast and robust body. At first, he killed isolated farmers, then went on to attack armed groups who gathered to take him on.
After his first victories, he picked up a pair of swords, then when a wolf tried to chase him away, he killed it and triumphantly shed his skin. Survivors of his attacks described, trembling, his incredibly fast jumps, and said they had seen out of the corner of their eye a flash of fur, moving from tree to tree and cover to cover.
They said that the slingers and archers aimed and tracked Raaz very slowly and, one by one, the shouldered militiamen and gourd-wielders were pounced on and sliced up or had their throats ripped out.
After multiple unsuccessful attempts to kill the creature, the local magistrate placed a huge bounty on Razelvarg's head and issued a call to arms. He was heeded more than expected: sorcerers, priests, men-at-arms, gladiators from Velyzar and Dwarves from the Celestial Fire Territory traveled to the region, drawn by the promise of a reward, a sense of moral duty, or both.
Many members of this impromptu crusade, particularly Yakai, proclaimed that they were furious with Razelvarg for tainting the folklore of their people.
Despite their shared goal, and in some cases despite their zeal and hatred, these bounty hunters were reluctant to cooperate, reluctant to share the prize and distrustful of potential allies.
Thus, Razelvarg is still in the wild, and the scattered incursions into his territory by the bravest or most reckless researchers have ended unseen by the creature, in humiliating failure or in the slaughter of the hunters. Meanwhile, Razelvarg continues to devastate entire fields and butcher any farmer who tries to defend his land against him.
