Paria parmi les parias, la survie même du Reinbeast est autant un miracle qu’un témoignage de sa force et de sa détermination. Né dans les profondeurs les plus sombres de la forêt de Durkham par un froid matin d’hiver, il a été immédiatement marqué par la couleur étrange de son pelage et son nez rougeoyant.
Tout au long de son enfance, le Reinbeast a dû se battre contre tous ceux qui voulaient l’expulser. Mais les coups et la cruauté n’ont fait qu’endurcir la pauvre créature et lui ont appris à se tenir droite et fière, quelles que soient les épreuves. Mais par une nuit de tempête, alors que le vent hurlait comme un dragon blessé entre les arbres tordus et noueux de Durkham, et qu’un terrible blizzard balayait le pays, son destin changea à jamais.
Forcé de sortir dans la nuit par le chef de sa tribu pour une course insensée qui devait sans aucun doute le mener à la mort, le Renard tomba sur un spectacle des plus déroutants. Un traîneau rempli d’objets étranges était là, pris dans la glace, et un homme vêtu d’une armure d’argent et de rouge travaillait sans relâche à réparer les dégâts.
Une petite meute de rennes grelottait à ses côtés, frigorifiée et fatiguée, incapable de tirer le lourd attelage. D’abord méfiant, le renne fut touché par la lumière pure qui semblait émaner de ce mystérieux humain, et par le soin qu’il mettait à aider ses montures épuisées. Il s’approcha prudemment et proposa son aide dans une langue commune approximative.
À sa grande surprise, les mots de l’homme résonnèrent dans son esprit avec force et clarté, comme s’ils avaient été prononcés par l’un des siens. Sir Nicholas, comme l’étrange se présenta, fut très reconnaissant de cette aide. Le renne étant désormais placé en tête, ses propres rennes parvinrent enfin à libérer le traîneau et à poursuivre leur route.
Grâce à une magie inouïe, ils traversèrent Teleria en une seule nuit pour récompenser les justes et punir les méchants, le nez rougeoyant du renne en tête. Il n’est pas surprenant que, lorsqu’on lui offrit un simple vœu pour son aide désintéressée, le renne demanda à rester au service de Sir Nicholas. C’est ainsi qu’il est resté pendant des siècles, tirant le puissant traîneau à travers les blizzards et les tempêtes, et se battant aux côtés de Sir Nicholas lorsque le besoin s’en faisait sentir.
