History of Richtoff l'Effronté (Richtoff the Bold)
An Oriflamme Lord's secondary title or nickname, known as an epithet in the vocabulary of their chivalric code, is not a mere corollary of informal speech, but an important part of a leader's chronicles and legacy. It is partly beyond his control, shaped by general sentiment and the languages of countless outsiders. Knowing this, most lords go out of their way to invent their own, steer emerging trends and censor unfavorable appellations. Despite their efforts, many lords have gone down in history with nicknames far more ignominious than Richtoff the Shameless. But to call him so is, for many, rather an understatement. Commonly used, even if Richtoff and his ministers strongly oppose it, many other epithets exist: Richtoff la Crapule, Richtoff du Flacon, as well as many other shades of vulgarity.
Richtoff was the fourth son of a duke, far from any inheritance of importance. He spent his days lounging and hunting with his circle of friends and flatterers. Hunting is another important element of the chivalric traditions of the Lords of the Oriflamme, often seen by nobles as a means of comparing prowess and putting an end to grudges without engaging in armed conflict. To facilitate this, nobles are expected to use traditional archaic models of bows and spears to ensure a fair standard of weaponry with which to judge their achievements. A trophy claimed by a nobleman under any circumstances other than during a ceremonial hunt with traditional weapons is considered as unglamorous as the carcasses provided by an ordinary trapper.
Richtoff, however, couldn't care less about this aspect of the hunt. Nor did he care about the glories and sacrifices of Kaerok chivalry. He used state-of-the-art tools, particularly the crossbow, and dipped his bolts in deadly toxins. Hunting peasants disdained poison, lest it spoil the meat, and among lords, poisoning was generally considered unworthy and cowardly. Richtoff, on the other hand, cared only for the slaughter of his prey. He loved the thrill of the hunt and wasn't afraid of facing deadly beasts, but making the battle fairer or prolonging it more than necessary didn't interest him at all.
Despised by many of his peers, Richtoff was accompanied by members of the lower classes on his ruthless hunts. But, as time went by, he became more ambitious, realizing that if he made lip service to the rules of the Lords of the Oriflamme, he might be able to orchestrate his rise to greatness.
The Duke's third son, Gofric, was out hunting with his younger brother Richtoff when he visited and was appalled by his methods. Richtoff begged forgiveness and asked Gofric to return for another hunt, properly carried out, as an apology. This time, traditions were observed, but were marred by Gofric's death in a tragic accident. After that, Richtoff was criticized by his two remaining elder brothers, Léon and Alfvar. Up until then, they had rarely paid any attention to him, concentrating instead on their rivalry for the position of preferred heir. Richtoff told them that he was upset, that he was a changed man, and that he would be a proper and responsible duke's son from now on.
The second son, Alfvar, died a year later, at a banquet attended by the three surviving brothers. He perished by grabbing his stomach shortly after feasting, and his death was attributed to poison in his wine or food. Richtoff and Léon, now the two immediate heirs to their estate, were both under suspicion. But Alfvar had other enemies who could not be dismissed, and many other lords and their agents had attended the banquet. No conclusive evidence was found against either brother.
Months passed, Richtoff and Léon estranged and bitter. Léon then fell gravely ill and lay at death's door for some time. Again, poisoning was suspected, but the elder brother's best healers and magicians were unable to diagnose or cure the toxin or disease that had struck him. He survived and recovered somewhat, but remained weak and bedridden. In this state, he abdicated his rights to his father's title and had Richtoff formally confirmed as heir presumptive. Richtoff agreed, and his traumatized, reclusive brother has remained silent and docile ever since. Richtoff accepted, and his traumatized, reclusive brother has remained silent and docile ever since. Richtoff made a great show of filial piety and lavished attentive care on Léon while, in reality, keeping him under house arrest.
Richtoff's father, the current Duke, is rather elderly but in good health, while Richtoff seems content to remain his heir apparent and is probably in no hurry to assume the role of ruler. He has returned to his hunts, which he now carries out in accordance with tradition, and has claimed the title of Effronté, for the bravery displayed when confronting dangerous animals. Those who have suspicions, grievances and concerns about Richtoff have their own names for him, as well as their own theories as to why he calls himself l'Effronté.
