Roxam's story (Roxam)
Although the underworld of Arnoc and the putrid Lakes of Sorrow are the main centers of the Lizardmen population, there are enclaves scattered throughout Teleria. One such clan survives in the Lost Isles, on a jungle-covered island that was once a stronghold of Dragon Descendants. Now calling themselves the Speq'chaa, these Lizardmen were isolationists who revered their ancestors. That is, until Roxam was laid.
The day Roxam hatched was full of omens. A comet was seen falling from the heavens into the ocean, and a volcanic eruption on the distant horizon spewed a cloud of ash and debris that settled on the jungle canopy. If these signs weren't obvious enough, it was immediately apparent that Roxam was no ordinary newborn. Small bony bosses protruded from the little Lizard Man's forehead, outgrowths which over time grew into large, curved horns. His naturally iridescent skin could change color to match his surroundings.
Given this peculiarity, it came as no surprise to the Speq'chaa elders that when he was still young, Roxam began prophesying. At first, his predictions were anecdotal. He knew when the deluges that swept the island's jungles would begin to fall, and he predicted whether the fishing coracles would return laden with fresh catches or carrying empty nets.
It wasn't long before, at his own request, Roxam was accepted into the clergy who administered the spiritual needs of the Speq'chaa. He soon spoke of a time of great change, which would threaten the clan's existence while opening up the possibility of a glorious new future. These prophecies were of great concern to the clan leaders, for it was said that Roxam, now known as the Horned Priest, had never been wrong. He had foreseen the epidemic of scale rot, his warning enabling the Speq'chaa to prepare for the awful disease. The great mudslide didn't surprise the clan either, thanks to Roxam's talents, and no lives were lost.
Roxam's prediction came true one morning when sentries posted atop the island's cliffs spotted a ship on the horizon. It was a great edifice of wood and canvas, dwarfing the tiny coracles that were the clan's sole means of navigation. The Speq'chaa gathered around, waiting fearfully, but following Roxam's advice, they took no tears and made no attempt to resist the sailors as they disembarked. They were Humans, creatures who existed in the stories that persisted in the clan's memories, dating back to a time when they had been united with the Descendants of Dragon.
The Humans were adventurers and merchants from the Kingdom of Kaerok, seeking fame and fortune by exploring the lost islands. Most had dealt with the Lizardmen before, but found it hard to equate the wretched criminal gangs infesting the Free City of Arnoc with the proud Speq'chaa, who had managed to maintain vestiges of their imperial past. They were particularly interested in the Speq'chaa's gold, but the Lizardmen were too wise to give it away so easily.
During a debate with the clan elders, Roxam managed to convince them that they should let him accompany the Humans. There was a whole world waiting beyond the islands: these visitors would certainly not be the last, and the Speq'chaa could not live forever in their splendid isolation. For the sake of the clan, they had to learn what was out there. The more they learned, the better prepared they would be when the visitors arrived.
The plan was hatched: Roxam, the horned priest, would travel Teleria as an emissary of the Speq'chaa. He would learn all he could about the world and return with this knowledge to the clan, where his advice could help direct their future. In exchange for a number of gold trinkets, the Kaerok merchants agreed to let him cross with them on their return journey. So Roxam traveled in Teleria, taking with him the headdress that symbolized the mark of priesthood for the Speq'chaa, as well as his Khépesh, his curved double blades.
After landing in Kaerok, Roxam traveled to Arnoc, sneaking in with his chameleon skills, where he discovered the thousands of Lizardmen living in poverty beneath the city. Their plight struck him hard, as did the fate of the clans living in the Lakes of Sorrow when he finally arrived in Petlas. His visions led him to believe that the Speq'chaa had much to teach these peoples about the dignity of unity. During his travels, Roxam scrupulously noted everything he learned, nurturing the hope that when he returned to his native island, he would be able to convince other Speq'chaa to visit their distant cousins in Anhelt and Peltas.
Perhaps the Speq'chaa will be able to show their fellow continentans a society where they are neither oppressed nor powerless, and remind them of a past where the proud Lizardmen held the very destiny of the world in their hands.
