History of Ruel the Huntmaster
Even among the narcissistic and pompous elite of the Dark Elves, Ruel has always been seen as an eccentric. Rarely seen without his bespoke insect armor, he displays a savage demeanor and a disdain for the noble decorum that many of his kin still cling to. Yet few equal him in the art of hunting and shooting, and those foolish enough to challenge Ruel soon find that they can neither run nor hide in the darkest parts of Durham Forest. Once the master of the hunt has found the scent of his prey, there is no escape. Unlike most of the infamous warriors his kind has spawned, Ruel was born a simple commoner and did not enjoy a noble, pampered childhood, with preceptors and servants to tend to his every need. His father was a sinister and cruel man who knew his son would have to excel if he was to be anything but another pawn that the nobles would sacrifice in their scheming. Day after day, Ruel was pushed to his last limits: forced to fend for himself against dangerous predators as soon as he knew how to use a bow and a spear, abandoned in the depths of the woods with only his intelligence and his knowledge of the field. As harsh and dangerous as this tutelage may have been, it also turned Ruel into an unparalleled killer. When he reached adulthood, the future master of the hunt had already found his first protector. Ikoras of the Cindered Blades, a well-known group of mercenaries, saw the potential in young Ruel and took him in as a protege. It was a bet that paid off as long as the goodwill between the two men lasted, but which also announced the loss of Ikoras. For years, Ruel served in the shadow of his benefactor, honing his already considerable skills until he earned his place as Ikoras' right-hand man. But Ruel knew only too well that in the cruel world of the Dark Elves, one was either the apex predator or a disposable servant. He eventually challenged Ikoras and killed him in single combat. No one dared to challenge Ruel's claims, and he took over as leader of the Cindered Blades for years to come. Money flowed, spent on weapons, magic trinkets and debauchery as soon as it was earned. But this life did not appeal to Ruel. One day he left his comrades behind, without a word, and headed for the heart of Durham. There he disappeared for a long decade. When Ruel finally returned home, he was covered in scars, as wild as a great wolf, and just as instinctive. He no longer sought to enrich himself by solving the problems of a wealthy fool – his only concern was to find prey worthy of his talent. Many renowned monsters and warriors died unseen and unheard until it was too late, and the legend of the Master of the Hunt grew. Crazy stories spread about an ancient shaman who had taught Ruel to transform into any creature he desired. That's why, these fools claimed, he was able to stalk his victims unseen, even in the brightest light of day. The truth, of course, was much simpler: Ruel's talent had been acquired by blood and tears, and by decades of brutal life that had taught him to win or die. Still, the Hunt Master took this with sardonic humor. Once more he ventured into the dark area of the forest, where the flow of arcane winds spawned creatures both terrible and majestic. But this time, Ruel wasn't after vicious black bears or deadly shadowstalkers. He instead preyed on beetles and twisted flies that grew to gargantuan sizes and could easily slice through an armored knight with their stingers. Their chitin was nearly impervious to steel, but even that wasn't enough to save the creatures from Ruel's deadly aim. Upon his return, the Huntmaster asked the best Dark Elf blacksmiths to fashion him armor and a longbow from carapaces imbued with magical power. In his vanity, Ruel killed the masters as soon as they finished fulfilling his request, so that no one else would know the secret of his creation. This is how the story of the hunting master continues. Perhaps you will finally be able to earn his loyalty and put his evil prowess to use for a greater cause. But beware ! Ruel serves only his own desires; he is a mortal enemy and an inconstant ally.
