Story of Survivante au Sable

La vie d’un orque est brutale et souvent courte, car il s’agit d’une société à la fois guerrière et exigeante, placée au bord de l’extinction par les guerres qu’elle a menées dans le passé. La faiblesse n’est pas la bienvenue ici, mais même parmi les Orques, il existe des tribus qui prônent la survie du plus fort bien au-delà de ce que la plupart de leurs congénères considéreraient comme sage.

Il existe d’innombrables rituels d’initiation sanglants et douloureux, et les sables du désert de Krokhan ne manquent certainement pas d’épreuves dangereuses. La tribu des Varshnaks, en particulier, est réputée pour sa brutalité. La tradition veut qu’un jour avant sa majorité, chaque orque soit capturé en pleine nuit, ligoté et emmené dans les profondeurs du désert.

Les chamans veillent à ce que ces jeunes guerriers tombent dans un profond sommeil grâce à un mélange d’herbes et d’épices suffisamment puissant pour terrasser un ogre, et leurs aînés ne détachent les malheureux qu’une fois leur destination atteinte – généralement une petite caverne dans les falaises, un terrier abandonné ou toute autre bizarrerie du terrain permettant de garder le juve en vie jusqu’à l’aube.

Le jeune orque se réveille et ne trouve rien d’autre qu’une petite gourde et un couteau rudimentaire à ses côtés. À partir de là, il doit se frayer un chemin à travers les dunes mortelles de Krokhan, survivre aux innombrables dangers qui le guettent et retrouver sa tribu.

Ce n’est qu’à ce moment-là que l’on peut espérer devenir un véritable Varshnak. Comme on pouvait s’y attendre, cette pratique maintient le nombre de membres de la tribu à un niveau peu élevé en raison du taux de mortalité de ses guerriers.

Mais ceux qui vivent jusqu’au bout de leur épreuve sont des survivants endurcis et expérimentés, capables de s’épanouir dans les conditions les plus rudes et de mépriser tout signe de faiblesse – car c’est la voie de leur Kin. Rencontrer ces raiders brutaux au combat est un défi à ne pas sous-estimer.
