Story of Searsha the Charred
The tragedy of the Lost Heart Tree of the Misty Woods has left a scar on all Sylvan beings, but few more so than Searsha la Calcinée, the Fairy once adored as the Emerald Dryad. Sylvans rarely speak of this fallen spirit because her story is only one of many that took place during those dark times, and it contains a truth too painful for many: it is one of the most gripping tales of what was lost.
The Emerald Dryad was one of the most peaceful and radiant inhabitants of the Bois de Brume. Mother of the forest and protector of its creatures, the Dryad spent her early years playing the wind in the trees for the friendly spirits of her glen. With no evil roots beneath her, she never wished to harm any living thing, and loved with all her heart all that was good and pure, born of the grace of the Heart Tree.
So it was even more terrible that the Emerald Dryad was one of those caught up in the corruption that infested and spread from the ancestral Heart Tree.
The Dryad's forest friends withered and died in the place they once called a sanctuary, at the twisted hands of the one they had once called the fairest of emerald trees. Never did the songs she had once shared calm her fury, nor did their cries of agony move her blackened heart. Some spirits able to escape corruption believed that their lost friends had been veiled by madness and that their true selves lay dormant in their bodies, and so they named the Dryad's new form Searsha, "the lady who is blind". But while her former friends hoped to restore Searsha's health, their sad side wished her to be truly lost and blind to her awful new existence.
Searsha haunted her once serene glades, led by the now destructive song of the Ancestral Rhythm. She trampled the beautiful flowers and destroyed the lives of every creature or magical Being who stood in her way.
During the final battle to stop the corruption of the Heart Tree, Searsha's glen became a site of carnage. Searsha battled sylvan, dwarven and shadow clan warriors with the fury of her twisted soul. In the wider conflict, her enemies were victorious and set fire to the Heart Tree. The bright enchanted flames that spread from the Sacred Grove consumed his glen, as well as his body, and his agony was matched only by the rage and pain of his soul at what had happened. Embraced by magical flames, the corruption of her heart and mind evaporated and the fire found an eternal home within her, changing her body forever. The Dryad was no longer emerald.
The corruption within her thus dispelled, Searsha awoke from what had felt like an endless drowsiness, caught in the embrace of evil. But, much to her chagrin, her violent nightmares of a grove deceived by blood and covered in soot had all been real. She looked down at the ashes deposited on the forest she had cherished with all her heart. The wind with which she had sometimes duetted no longer sang its songs of elation, but carried the embers of her beloved, once-dancing trees and smiling flowers like an unfeeling reaper.
The cries of the once Emerald Dryad echoed across the devastated landscape. She wept for the years she'd lost, the years she'd stolen from her friends, for her precious glen that had once been a haven for all that was good and kind, and how she'd turned it into a killing field.
The ghostly touch of the destructive Rhythm, corrupted, lingered in the background of her memory. Searsha remembered how he had called her, ordered her mind, body and soul to commit his atrocities. Clutching the ashes of her home in her burning fists, the Dryad howled how she would take revenge on the evil that had contaminated her heart and, ultimately, caused the ruin of her home.
When the Sylvan guards surrounded her with weapons in hand, Searcsha didn't attack them. She only asked them to tell her who was responsible for the desecration. The Guards told her about Siroth and his dark plots, and dubbed her Searsha the Calcined Dryad as her flaming form disappeared into the depths of the forest, where she began her hunt.
To this day, the charred Dryad seeks to punish the servants of evil. The Sylvans tell the youngsters that the forest is safer than it was, but warn them not to gaze upon the dark figure. The once magnificent Fairy is ready for anything in her quest for vengeance and will burn anyone who stands in her way from the Telerian surface. Above all, they say, Searsha la Calcinée is a terrible reminder of what the Bois de Brume has become; a symbol of a wounded people and what was stolen from them, and the retribution they desire at all costs.
