History of Urost Capturâme

Urost Capturâme was born in the fecund horrors of the Marais de Fiel, a bleak expanse of quagmire near the east coast of Anhelt. Becoming an insignificant black magic enthusiast in early adulthood, Urost was captured by an inquisitor passing through his home village, but managed to escape. Panicking, Urost knew that fleeing into the Fiel Marsh meant almost certain death, but he dreamed of a better fate than the flames of the inquisitor's pyre. So he entered the marshes and was never heard from again, at least not in his human form.

What horrendous trials Urost is said to face in the Swamp of Fiel, no one knows. It was said that the gloomy swamp had developed on the site of an ancient battle between Elves and Demonic Rejects. The slaughter was of such magnitude, and the powers unleashed of such intensity, that over time the swamp developed its own sentience, albeit trapped within the confines of the ancient battlefield. But with Urost, it discovered the possibility of escape.

Once the being who had once been known as Urost re-emerged from the marshes, he was unrecognizable. The spirit of the Fiel Swamp had penetrated him, invading his body and soul, and poisoning him with its festering evil. Finally, the sentience of the cursed place had found a way to break the limits of its own imprisonment and spread everywhere, using the subverted capacity for action of Urost's soul.

Urost was imprisoned in the Capturâme, a framework formed from loamy substrate, gnarled, worm-eaten roots and stinking marsh silt. Trapped in unspeakable agony, his physical body and infected soul acted as a receptacle for the parasitic sentience of the Marais de Fiel. Shuffling his feet and stomping forward, he made his way home, terrified and desperate. His old friends and other villagers fled in horror as he appeared. He wandered the moors and hills, in the grip of pain, unknowingly spreading swamp poison and helping the Fiel Swamp to break its boundaries and expand.

News of the "Monster of the Fiel Swamp" spread, and the same Inquisitor who had once hunted Urost returned to destroy the beast. In the ensuing battle, the Inquisitor's followers were either mulched by Urost's toxic miasma or had their bones crushed and their flesh pulverized by his huge fists. The Inquisitor was grabbed and consumed by the dripping maw of horror. At that moment, Urost knew deliverance: his spirit was freed to disappear into the telluric lines of Teleria, his place in the Capturâme taken by the howling soul of the Inquisitor. Now it was Urost's turn to live on as a vessel of the Marais de Fiel.

Those who were not adepts of the black magic that had given rise to the sentience of the Marais de Fiel knew nothing of soul-swapping. For those who had heard of the legend of the monster, it was always Urost, the poor wretch who had dabbled in the esoteric arts and paid the price. So the creature's name remained, even when the being it contained changed.

For anyone imprisoned in the Capturâme, the objective remains the same. Tortured by the agony of the poisons of the Marais de Fiel, the individual must seek out and consume another soul, praying that it will take his or her place in the nauseating prison. Not all souls are created equal, at least when it comes to the spirit of the Marais de Fiel. The devoured individual must be considered worthy of the swamp's evil spirit or the original prisoner's sentence will continue. This is why the thing commonly known as Urost generally seeks out the greatest heroes and warriors, and will do anything to consume them. To do so, Urost can rely on his almost total invulnerability, his bone-root and flesh-manure sewing themselves back together after each blow. The poisons that coat him are lethal and can be released not only to cause further chaos, but also to allow Urost to experience a momentary catharsis during which he shares his pain with others.

In their hallucinations, some of the people trapped in the Capturâme seek out practitioners of black and undead magic, believing they might know how to free them. However, this hope is in vain. Many allied Undead have learned to use Urost's despair in their favor, forming alliances with the rancid creation. What some don't realize is that if their promises aren't kept, Urost is as relentless in hunting them down as he was in helping them.

As soon as Urost manages to devour a worthy adversary, the cycle begins anew and the curse resets. And all the while, the muddy Fiel Swamp continues to swell, its boundaries expanding to rot fields, stagnate wells and consume villages and farms. If left unchecked, a day will come in the far distant future when all of Anhelt could be reduced to a monotonous festering quagmire and the evil in Urost's heart will reign supreme.
