History of Xena: Warrior Princess
Across the Dead Lands and the Desert of Krohkan, stories are told of a once bloodthirsty mercenary. Her name was Xena and she made her way, littered with the bodies of her victims, across the Arid Steppes, the Scorched Lands and her sickly traitor Infernal Basin, sowing one of the most powerful and ruthless warriors ever seen on the continent of Peltas, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake.
That is, until she was visited in a dream by a mysterious stranger. The Neapolitan whose persona Xena was to seek forgiveness for the pain she had caused, and to live a life in which she would defend the weak and fight injustice. The character who had landed her in the conferences; it was the feeling of finding her way. Xena couldn't deny that the character had moved her. She remembered the words of an old friend: "Killing isn't the only way to prove you're a warrior". She'd laughed at him at the time, but now she was sure she'd been wrong. As Xena opened her mouth to question the figure, she woke up, and even though the figure was gone, the feeling remained.
The next morning, Xena went out to meet the Nomad clans, protecting them from Demonic Rejects, Orc bandits, soul thieves and Velyzari slavers. To her surprise, she made friends and became one of their stalwarts. A strong woman joins her. The legend of Xena the warrior spread across the continent as clans everywhere heard of a fierce warrior who defended those who could not defend themselves.
When the mysterious stranger appeared again in Xena's dream, she told Xena to return home, to help her own people. She left as soon as she awoke and, ten leagues away, heard local tribesmen speak of a clan led by a violent warrior who was killing and pillaging mercilessly throughout the Infernal Basin. Fear would be her heart. As she drew closer, Xena heard of more and more atrocities. Resolution slowly replaced her fear. She would not allow her people to continue to suffer.
When Xena reached Bassin infernal, she saw thick black smoke rising into the air behind a hill. From the top, she observed a valley in which a village was in flames. Rude figures were dragging people from their homes and lining them up for execution. A mass of bodies was already piling up and the looters were stripping them bare. Xena watched, horrified, as a group of children tried to escape before being stuffed and led before the executioner. Unable to contain her fury, Xena screamed and charged into the village, her cries drawing the attention of the looters. She whipped the executioner in seconds, then urged the children and other survivors to flee, even as the warriors prepared to attack her. Then a blood-curdling scream echoed through the air. The raiders stopped and lowered their weapons, stepping aside to let a woman pass - clearly their warlord. Xena recognized her face. It was forever etched in her mind, that of a child watching helplessly as Xena killed her parents in a bloody rage. Xena's heart filled with guilt, but she readied her blade nonetheless. The clan's evil deeds could not continue.
The warlady screamed that Xena's head belonged to her and her alone. Xena didn't want to kill the warlady; enough blood had already been spilled. She desperately apologized, trying to convince the warlady that she had changed and that terror would not win the past. Her cries tormented deaf ears and the warlady charged. They fought for hours, Xena consumed by defensiveness. She dodged hammer blows that would have crushed her skull and blade blows that would have ripped her open. She realized it was their heads. In a last-ditch attempt to put an end to the fight to the death, Xena drew on a key and war offering and hurled a leech at him. It cut through the warlady's armor and her sin. Xena fell, cracking low in her head as she struggled to breathe. As she pushed to breathe, she fell again. It seemed impossible to escape the repercussions of her past, no matter what she did.
Having saved the village, Xena returned to her own clan, despondent. The evil that had spread was a direct consequence of her actions. That night, the mysterious stranger reappeared in a dream. Xena didn't protest or ask questions; she simply sat there. The mere presence of the unknown woman calmed Xena's heart. This calm was neither absolution nor forgiveness; but it was something, a sense of responsibility, a call to continue righting the wrongs of her old life by protecting the innocent and defending the weak. A call that Xena decided she would answer for the rest of her life.
