Story of Yoshi the Drunkard (Yoshi the Drunkard)
Yoshi had always found being a soldier boring. Not the fights, nor the smashed skulls – he always liked that – but the discipline, the subordination to a haughty and powerful noble, the waking up at odd hours, all that was intolerable! No, Yoshi wasn't cut out to be a soldier, and yet he was, fighting for his homeland against the fearsome Demonspawn. He was young then, and despite all his recriminations, he believed in rebellion with all his heart. Despite the many trials, Yoshi remained courageous and sincere. And the Ancestors smiled at him. He lived to see the end of the war, celebrated the liberation of the Dawnlands, and enjoyed the spoils of victory. For a few years, Yoshi roamed the kingdom, feasting until his pockets were empty, and starting brawls for the sake of fighting. Ever a wanderer, Yoshi didn't settle down, even after he ran out of money. It wasn't until he found himself drunk, sleeping on the porch of a monastery on a cold spring night, that his fate improved. The Shadowkin monks were all warriors, devoted to the study of martial arts in all their forms. Also, when an aggressive boor had disrupted their morning rites by demanding water and food to fill their bellies, their response had been as firm as one would expect. The fight was brief. Yoshi came away both impressed and humbled, which was quite rare. The monks appreciated the raw talent they had detected in this fight and offered the intruder to join them. Yoshi took this chance, because few people could boast of having given him such a beating. Not everything was easy, of course. He had to relearn discipline, pull himself together and master his lowest instincts – a prospect the jolly fellow didn't like at all. Fortunately, the skills he studied at the monastery were a good compromise for these disadvantages, and the monks fed him well! Even today, Yoshi remembers with great affection the years he spent in this monastery. But the thirst for adventure is an enemy that is not easily defeated, and Yoshi could not remain locked in a cloister forever. He learned what he could, mastered his body, and finally bade farewell to his friends before venturing out into the world beyond the fortress walls. It is this same thirst for adventure that drove Yoshi to join the first Shadowkin who left the borders of their kingdom to travel west to the other lands of Teleria, and many were their adventures along the way. From the endless dunes of Krokhan, where Yoshi faced mighty barbarian heroes in single combat, to the great elven cities, he quickly became a legend among mercenaries and tavern patrons. Yoshi remains an enigma for outsiders, whose opinion oscillates between admiration and disgust. A man of strange origins, rambunctious and cheerful – but quick to let his cudgel do the talking – is certainly not the easiest guest for the city guards to deal with. Although the strange spirits summoned by Yoshi cause great concern among traditionalist High Elves and Knights of Sacrifice.
