In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, dodging and blocking at the right moment can make all the difference when facing the toughest enemies. Master these two mechanics, and you'll turn every enemy attack into an opportunity to counterattack.
How does Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's hybrid combat system work?
Sandfall Interactive designed a hybrid combat system that mixes Turn-based RPG and real-time action. The result: every enemy turn requires you to react manually, with no safety net.
When an enemy attacks, you have the choice between to dodge Where prepare. These two mechanics are often determinants : A good block or a well-timed dodge can change the outcome of a confrontation against a boss.
The main challenge: No indicators on the screen doesn't help you anticipate attacks. You have to rely on animations, visual cues, and audio cues. So it all comes down to your attention and how quickly you react.
How to dodge successfully in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
Dodging is the the most accessible technique to prevent damage. Just press the defensive button just before the opponent's shot makes contact. The reaction time is short: about 0.2 to 0.3 seconds depending on the attack.

Attention : A poorly timed dodge doesn't cancel the damage. If you press the button too early or too late, your character will move but will still take the hit.
If you pass a perfect dodge, without missing a beat, you can earn Additional APs. To do that, equip the Lumina Insaisissable, which grants +1 AP for every perfect dodge. This bonus applies only to’only once per turn.
In practice, focus on dodging when facing a boss whose sequences you don't know yet. It's more forgiving than the parry and gives you time to get a feel for the rhythm of the attacks.
How can you pull off successful parades in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
The parade is riskier than dodging, but much more rewarding. A successful block allows you to counterattack immediately and deal damage to your opponent. Its timing window is tighter than that of the dodge.

If the enemy strikes only once, a single parry is enough to counterattack. However, when facing a 3-shot combo, you must block the three consecutive strikes. The hits don't always come at the same pace, which makes some combos really hard to predict.
A series of successful saves also fills the Fracture gauge. Once it's full, you can stun your opponents and break down their defenses, a decisive advantage against even the toughest bosss.
To improve, start by practicing on weak enemies. You can refine your timing without taking any risks. When facing a boss, start by dodging to get a feel for the rhythm of its attacks, then try to block once you’ve mastered the animation.
How to perform a Counter Gradient in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
the Against Gradient is an advanced mechanism of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, designed to counter the special attacks enemies—the ones that hurt the most. You unlock it as you progress through the adventure, once the game grants you access to this mechanic.
This is the most difficult to master in this RPG. Sa timing window is even tighter than that of a standard parry. If you miss it, you'll take extensive damage.

- RT on Xbox
- R2 on PS5
- Z on PC
The principle is the same as with a classic block: you push just before impact. The difference is a even shorter timing and a much greater reward. A successful Counter-Gradient opens up a huge damage window on the boss.
The best advice is still to learn how to read the animations from your opponents. Every enemy gives away its move before striking: spot that signal, and you can turn a risky moment into an opportunity to deal heavy damage during your battles.
