What exactly is a gold disc?
In France, an album goes gold at 50,000 sales equivalents. A single obeys a different threshold.
Here is the official SNEP album chart:
- ✅ Gold disc 50,000 sales equivalents
- ✅ Platinum disc 100,000 sales equivalents
- ✅ Diamond disc 500,000 sales equivalents
For a single, it's more like streams converted: a gold single is equivalent to around 15 million streams.
👌 This is important for understanding the nuance When we read that a rapper has «100 gold records», we're often talking about 100 gold singles, not 100 albums. The two awards don't have the same value.
💡 Why do rappers rack up so many certifications today?
Since 2016, the SNEP includes streams in sales equivalents (1,500 streams = 1 album sold). Thanks to the rise of streaming, rap (or hip-hop), the dominant genre on platforms, has logically benefited more than the others.
This explains the explosion in certifications since 2018, to the point of upending the entire music industry.
