History of Falmond Lamedeuil
Falmond Lamedeuil, legendary marshal of the Sacred Order, was a hero of the Telerian League during the Gaelic War. Sullen, taciturn and sullen, Lamedeuil was renowned not for his considerable military skills or superb fighting abilities, but for his unshakeable will. His determination was ironclad and his faith inflexible.
Falmond first came to prominence as commander of the defense of the Renaissance Lands. With the Order's armies elsewhere, the region's defense fell to penitent workers, retired veterans and budding clergymen, whom Falmond mobilized to fight again and again against armies of elite Gaellens. Even as he fought, he heard whispers that the true architect of the assaults was not the Gaellen Pact, but someone or something else.
Nevertheless, Falmond had no time to pursue these rumors. Losses were mounting, and he was struggling to maintain the unity of his dwindling army as the war continued. Wherever the defenders faltered or the enemy threatened to invade, the Marshal would appear, exhorting the faithful. No matter how often they repelled one assault, another would follow. Even the strongest defenders feared defeat was inevitable; all except Falmond, whose resolve hardened with every battle.
To bolster the fighting spirit of his exhausted soldiers, Falmond had the blades of the fallen men reforged into a single weapon: an ultimate sword, so that he and the other survivors would remember and persevere in the name of the gloriously faithful dead. He thus earned the nickname "Lamedeuil", and it was with this mournful weapon that he led the final defense of the Renaissance Lands. The Army of the Unprepared, as it came to be known, retreated to a narrow pass near the Eternal Citadel, outnumbered five to one. The battle dragged on for several days, with the Order's troops slowly withdrawing. The Pact army believed that victory was inevitable and led the way, unaware that they were being drawn into range of the Citadel's outer defenses, where hidden artillery units and wounded troops carrying crossbows were stationed. They didn't fire until the Gaellens were within a hundred paces of the ramparts. They couldn't miss. Thousands were killed in a matter of minutes. The Order's losses were monstrous, but they won the battle.
For this victory, Falmond Lamedeuil is remembered as a saint, and members of the Order, who seek to follow his example in all they do, hold him in high esteem. His face adorns busts and tapestries, and his statue stands silently guard over the entrance to the Eternal Citadel. His story is told on the anniversary of the final defense of the Renaissance Lands, and the Order's apprentices learn it in full. He is the pinnacle of everything a Sacred Order warrior can and should be. But Lamedeuil's story doesn't end with the Gaelic War.
Once victory over the Gaellens had been won, Falmond was freed from the burden of immediate duty and was finally able to pursue the truth hidden behind the whispers heard during the war, namely that the attacks on the Renaissance Lands had not been the work of the Gaellen Pact alone, but of another group as well. Falmond questioned survivors and prisoners, studied ancient texts and stories forbidden to all but the most privileged, and slowly came to discover the true nature of his adversary. A being who sowed dissension wherever he roamed, bringing only confusion and pain.
For months, Falmond searched for the whereabouts of the creature he came to know as Karnage the Anarch, a Demonic Reject who cared only for chaos. Although his superiors in the Sacred Order initially doubted the creature's existence, Falmond's stubborn insistence convinced them. He led expeditions into the Red Peak Mountains and the snowy lands of Frostheim, then into the swamps of Peltas, following a trail of broken communities and treachery. Wherever he went, he discovered new evidence of his enemy, as well as survivors of the creature's machinations, and his determination to destroy it grew stronger.
Finally, he arrived at the ancient ruin of Roshad, on the edge of the Krokhan Desert, where he finally met his adversary. There, the Anarch subjected Lamedeuil and his followers to an excruciating spiritual spell that caused them to relive the battles of the Gaelic War over and over again, without respite. Falmond stood his ground and broke the spell's control through sheer force of will and his absolute hatred of this enemy. Karnage escaped before the commander of the Sacred Order could take his revenge, but not before hundreds of bewitched Lumaya soldiers had killed each other in terrified rampages. Falmond himself was mortally wounded.
Falmond's body was never found. One survivor claimed that as Lamedeuil lay dying, leaning against a broken and bloody statue of Lumaya, a strange figure, shining with a sacred radiance, appeared and knelt beside him. When the figure rose to his feet, Falmond Lamedeuil had vanished.
