History of Énorme Ukko
Before he became a Skinwalker, Ukko was an important Orc in his tribe, remote in the lush but dangerous Lost Islands, far from the peaceful Kaerok coastline. Ukko was a huge consumer of shamanic wisdom and hearty meals, whose appetite for all forms of power and knowledge led him to a misadventure deep in the dense, mountainous jungle of his native island. Stumbling upon a lost temple, Ukko was attacked by a strange, ancient boar-beast which, though half-mad, seemed intent on guarding the place's impenetrable secrets at all costs. Badly wounded but victorious, Ukko contracted the Skinwalker curse as a result of his wounds and the mixing of the creature's blood with his own. He lost consciousness and his flesh reformed, taking on the appearance of a boar. When he regained his senses, he endured a series of painful rebirths, each followed by the same terrible realization. Whenever he caught sight of his transformation in a puddle or a piece of polished stone, his conscious mind was sent into an atavistic state of rage and panic. Eventually, the beast within him would calm down, allowing Ukko to discover the consequences of yet another frightening rampage he had no memory of.
This cycle could have broken his spirit. Instead, he remembered the lessons in self-control and moderation that his mentors in the shamanic arts had always taught him. He had never understood the true value of their advice until he had to use it during this crisis. Putting them into practice, he finally stopped his unconscious rages, and set eyes on the ruins and the jungle with a mind finally sane and clear again. The now boar-like Ukko was still dying to satisfy his curiosity and discover the truth about the ruined temple, which seemed older than any structure he'd ever seen or touched. So he spent some time in the ruins, coming to terms with the changes in his body and mind, and studying the glyphs and signs within the temple as best he could.
He found no information about his curse, the boar guardian or the temple's builders. But he did glean some valuable magical secrets from this primitive place, enough to elevate his advanced but limited spell mastery. The powers of life and death, the flow and storage of that power, and the totemic works required; the things Ukko had longed for, were finally his, to some extent at least. His curiosity was still not satisfied, and remained keen even when he broke his self-imposed exile in the temple.
But Ukko couldn't bring himself to return to the village of his childhood. He couldn't risk approaching his tight-knit community in this strange new form, which he knew required constant vigilance and control. So, instead of returning, he did something his people had always advised against: he hailed one of Arnoc's merchant ships, which occasionally did business in the Lost Isles. Among the seasoned crew who had sailed far and seen much, this strange native Skinwalker was certainly unusual, but not so strange that they refused to welcome him, especially when Ukko's infusions and songs cured one of their sick. He tasted their rations and found them insipid, but the continental delicacies presented to him were delicious. There were also acquaintances there among the so-called civilized people, and he thought that perhaps, somewhere on the continent of Anhelt, he could find out more about the curse that had transformed him. So, from lively Arnoc, past the ruins of Narbuk and through the treacherous Durham Forest, he wandered north, freely sharing his tales and ideas. He expected the same in return, serving monks and traders in exchange for food and knowledge, and sometimes performing purification rituals.
In time, Ukko's name and reputation began to precede him, and he found that he liked the fame. It seemed only to offer him more and more opportunities to learn. When asked about his shamanic formulas, secrets and ideas, he spoke simply of "Ukko's blessing", "Ukko's wrath" and so on. After all, his mentors had taught him many things, but with all he had learned and overcome, Ukko's magic was truly his own. He made sure that his public persona remained as close as possible to the model of an arrogant, naive, narrow-minded islander, which served to mask his true intellect and ambitions. As a result, tales of the "Mighty Ukko", which their simplicity made all the easier to propagate, began to proliferate, lending ever greater weight to his name. But he had not deviated from his original objective. Having learned much about the Skinwalkers during his travels, but nothing about a cure for the curse, he now approached the illustrious lands of Aravia, home of the High Elves. To what extent their sensibilities and his will clash remains to be seen.
