History of Roi Gallcobar
Gallcobar is a name known and revered throughout Teleria. He is a fairy-like being, a legendary king among the Sylvans, a great leader of a bygone age, and his renowned exploits appear throughout the centuries of history.
The Celestial Iron Dwarves possess stone sculptures depicting an elven warrior wearing the skin of a Lizard Man and slaughtering Demonic Rejects with a thorny staff. The scholars of Kaerok possess centuries-old scrolls archiving the efforts of a vine-wrapped King Sylvain fighting alongside soldiers of the Free Cities against the Norr of Frostheim. The Elves of Aravia recount how a vine-covered hero protected the nobles against Dark Elf assassins. While the peoples he protects may not always agree, the form of this gallant warrior persists through time and place.
Gallcobar was a king of the Sylvans before Siroth's corruption tarnished the Misty Woods. Kind and just, he was a protector of the forest and a powerful mage who defended it against invaders.
The most remarkable of his early battles was when he single-handedly stopped an attempt by a clan of Dragon Descendants to poach the wildlife of the Misty Woods. He summoned vines that struck like vipers to lacerate his enemies, and his last opponent was the huge Dragon Descendant chief, whom he pulverized with his staff. After that, he donned a suit of armor made from the warrior's skin.
While Gallcobar patrolled the perimeter of the Bois de Brume borders to repel invaders, the forest was afflicted with a terrible contamination. Gallcobar sent out scouts to investigate.
Only one returned, with grave news of the Heart Tree's corruption. He told the king how his comrades had suddenly turned on each other in a frenzy after approaching the source of the Rhythm. Horrified, the king gathered a group of warriors and led the charge on the Heart Tree to confront the growing threat head-on.
Gallcobar discovered an evil corrupting the Heart Tree and spreading through its roots throughout the forest. Demonic offshoots had infested the valleys around the Heart Tree, and fairy Beings and local spirits had degenerated into mad, murderous shells of their former selves.
In the ensuing battle, the Sylvans sacrificed their lives to defeat the Demonic Rejects, but those who fell to the corruption bolstered the enemy ranks. Mages and healers worked tirelessly to find a cure for their madness and a solution to purify the Heart Tree.
When a potential repellent for malice was concocted, Gallcobar himself assumed its delivery to the Heart Tree, in the first of many attempts over the years to drive evil from its roots. Fighting his way through Demonic Rejects and vicious poison vines, Gallcobar administered a concoction to the Tree, but to no avail.
During his heroic effort, one of the branches wielded by the corrupted Rhythm pierced the king's flesh, infusing him with the darkness that had affected so many Sylvans. In despair, Gallcobar injected himself with the purgative remedy, slowing but not stopping the poison coursing through his veins that would one day take over his mind.
Once the battle was over, and the Sylvans defeated, Gallcobar rested. The power of the corruption in his body grew, and control over his senses eluded him. Black blood flowed through his veins, discoloring his skin. It was then that the Arbiter came to him and offered him a Shard.
In exchange for an eternity of servitude to Lumaya, he could enjoy immortality from the Shard, Gallcobar would once again be the hero he had been, before the corruption took hold of him. But the Arbiter warned him that the corruption within him would fester again if he remained outside the Shard for long periods. He accepted the offer.
The Gallcobar Shard remained in the possession of the Sylvains, so they could call upon it to protect the forest in battle or advise its descendants, its vitality restored each time. Most crucially, he was awakened to fight alongside Sylvains, Dwarves and the Shadow Clan, helping to lead this unified army to a long-awaited victory that stopped the spread of corruption. With Mistwood saved from evil, Gallcobar could finally rest in peace.
But the Arbiter still needed him. She took Gallcobar's Shard to the four corners of Teleria to defend besieged cities and save monarchs from certain death, but she also recognized the king's wisdom. He helped people of all races recover from the ravages of war and guided young monarchs in the art of power, and the green of his dragon-skin armor became a promise of hope for Lumaya's faithful.
When the Arbiter's power waned, she took Gallcobar's Shard back to the Misty Woods where it could rest surrounded by its trees and people, but told only a few Sylvans where it rested, should they ever need it in a time of great peril. Gallcobar passed into legend. Few souls today know where his Shard is hidden, and they hope that the day they need this mighty warrior's help will never come.
