Lonatharil's Story
The role and title of basileus has not been used for centuries by the High Elves. It was adopted only by monarchs, signifying their responsibility to lead their armies into battle from the front line and their willingness to die alongside their soldiers if necessary.
Few individuals known as basileus died peacefully and, after the Age of Hellfire, during which many monarchs were killed, it was decided to no longer use the title. The potential instability caused by the premature death of a queen or king in battle was indeed significant, and something the royal family and nobility of Aravia no longer wished to risk. Lonatharil was the last basileus.
While ruling Aravia, Lonatharil longed for songs of his exploits to be sung. He wished to be immortalized in marble, glorified like the heroic basileus of old, then idolized by his successors.
He spent every waking second training his body and mind to resemble the memories of yesteryear; such as his hero, Roanas, who went off to serve eternally Teleria in the Arbiter's army during the First Great War. While Lonatharil's predecessor was known as the Great White Eagle of Aravia, he became known as the Black Hawk. Clad in jet-black golden armor, he struck down all who threatened his kingdom with a sword as sharp as a raptor's talons, while wearing a golden crown.
It wasn't long into young Lonatharil's reign that a test worthy of his hero presented itself. During the Second Great War, Siroth opened the portals to his kingdom of Anathraad, allowing his legions of Undead and Demonic Rejects to invade Teleria.
The size of Siroth's armies shocked even the Arbiter, who realized that she and her forces alone could not repel this threat. She called for help.
As soon as the Arbiter's call reached Aravia, Lonatharil sprang into action, mobilizing the kingdom's armies. Having read the stories of Roanas' valiant army and his legendary speeches, Lonatharil addressed his hastily assembled forces with great pomp and pageantry. He tried desperately to imitate the greatness of Roanas, repeating phrases used by the basileus that he had learned by heart. It was the news of the tearing apart of reality near Aravia's eastern border that put an end to Lonatharil's sermon. Without hesitation, he ordered his armies to march against Siroth's forces.
With Demonic Rejects and Undead rushing into his realm, Lonatharil directed his forces directly at the portal, abandoning all caution and strategy. In battle, the clash of flesh, steel and sinew was brutal, with the High Elves fighting with unwavering determination and discipline.
Remembering how Roanas flew like a great eagle in battle, Lonatharil spurred his horse close to the chasm of the underworld and plunged into the fray, falling on his opponents like the great Black Hawk he sought to embody. He shredded Undead and Demonic Rejects with his blade, and his warriors were inspired by their sovereign's courage.
They leapt forward, driving back Siroth's forces. As the battle raged and blood flowed, the ferocity of Lonatharil's battle cries struck terror into the hearts of the most fearsome of the Demonic Rejects.
After hours of fighting, Siroth's attacking forces had been defeated and Lonatharil stood before the portal as his mages wove rings of magical chains to close it. His golden hair was sticky with blood and his once gleaming blade was now black with the viscera of slaughtered Demonic Rejects.
Letting out a final battle cry, he collapsed to the ground in dismay, tears streaming down his face. Lonatharil felt empty. If he'd realized what his hero had done, why didn't he feel fulfilled? Why was he terrified? At last he realized. The Arbiter had come to collect Roanas so he could join her. She was nowhere in sight. What mistake had he made? He was ashamed. He'd only been slightly wounded, which certainly meant he hadn't fought valiantly enough. He wasn't worthy of praise.
Lonatharil took a dagger from a slain enemy and slit his wrists. Just then, as her life force was waning, the Arbiter appeared. Before he died, she placed his willing soul in a Shard, just as she had done for Roanas. Lonatharil's surviving soldiers wept tears of joy at the sight, and the High Elves have been singing ever since of their fallen leader's tireless bravery and how he defeated a terrible army of Demonic Rejects and Undead.
Just as they do with Basileus Roanas, the people of Aravia hope that Lonatharil, their Black Falcon, will return and that his talons will rip away the corruption that has gripped Teleria in the ages since the Second Great War.
