History of Nergigante l'Archère
Sayjida is one of the most experienced guides for those wishing to cross the Krokhan Desert. Caravanners transporting goods from the trading posts of the Valdemar Strait to the bustling souks of Valzyr also trust her. She is well acquainted with monsters such as the voracious dart ghouls and the multi-fanged dune stalkers. In her first job, she transported barrels of plum porter through the mounds of man-eating lion ants of Mali Fali vin haine without spilling a single drop.
Thanks to this experience, Sayjida could quickly assess whether monster stories were true or whether they came from overexcited merchants, whose minds were clouded by the intolerable heat. But when several caravans all reported seeing sponges embedded in the walls of a commonly used valley, Sayjida knew she had to investigate.
While a convoy she was accompanying took a break at an oasis near the valley, Sayjida took her bow and explored the area. Throughout the valley, as rumored, were huge black sponges embedded in the rocky walls of the valley. She couldn't even scratch them with her knife. They were as hard as they were large and rough to the touch. Curiosity usually didn't pay, Sayjida knew, but she ventured further into the valley.
As Sayjida turned a corner with a bow in hand, she recognized something she hadn't expected. A small feline creature, dressed in a hunter's outfit and busily taking notes, was examining one of the sponges. It declared itself to be a Palico, the assistant to a hunter from another world who had traveled here from a place beyond the borders of Teleria.
Sayjida had barely begun to answer when a terrible cry rang out from deep within the valley. She didn't need to be told twice: she quickly motioned to her new companion to follow her, and they ran out of the valley at full speed.
Once they were safe, Sayjida listened to Palico's story. If this Ruiner Nergigante wasn't eliminated, it could burrow much further, wreaking havoc on the trade routes and Valzyr, and greatly damaging his profits. Sayjida offered to defeat the monster, and the Palico rejoiced, immediately thinking of Sayjida, who resembled a journa, filled with notes from previous hunts that would be vital in defeating this opponent.
Sayjida led the Palico to the climbing point of her caravan in the nearby oasis and made sure her new friend remained hidden. If any of the caravaners spotted the talking feline, they would cage it and be on their way to a Velzyr souk before sunrise. While the Palico slept, Sayjida worked by the moonlight of the desert, using the scrap metal she had stolen from unguarded carts to create all kinds of traps and alarms. That night, she sneaked into the Nergigante Valley and set up a series of traps that she hoped would at least tire the monster out.
The next morning, the duo headed back into the thorn valley, avoiding the trigger wires of Sayjida's traps, heading for the spot where they had met. After exchanging knowing nods, they began to howl and shout, as if trying to awaken the entire Krokhan Desert. By the time the Nergigante's deafening roar joined the chorus, they might even have succeeded.
It was a monster unlike any she'd ever seen. Studded with long black spines almost two meters long, it exuded a primitive anger, strained by years of struggle. The giant, furious beast charged towards Sayjida and the Palico, spreading its spiked wings and leaning on the genius of its jet-black horns. The duo ran at full speed to escape, setting off traps to follow them in their desperate flight. The Nergigante charged through each of Sayjida's traps, none holding him back. Stones fell from either side of the valley, dragged along by Sayjida's traps, and the Nergigante leapt over them effortlessly. Bolas sprang up from the ground to bind the beast's legs, but its thorns cut the ropes before they could find their target. The chase continued across the vast plain, where Sayjida finally turned to face her pursuer.
Sayjida unleashed a rain of arrows, her own thorns, on the monster.
It is said that arrows and thorns covered the valley after the hunt. The caravans soon began traveling through the valley again, their path marked by curious black stone thorns, which many travelers claimed were bones. Sayjida returned to duty, now clad in armor bristling with part of these same thorns, and carrying a fearsome matching bow.
