History of Strategos Islin

Strategos Islin is considered by some to be one of the finest commanders Aravia has ever produced. He has never attempted to dissuade anyone from this belief, for Islin's sharp military mind is matched only by his pride.

Islin first made a name for himself as a leader during the campaigns to establish High Elf colonies on the west coast of Peltas. A young officer without distinction, he commanded the defense of the White Tower, an Aravian coastal outpost attacked by the orc warlord Gorr Bloodhand. The garrison was vastly outnumbered, but through careful management of supplies and precise, deadly sorties from a magical port hidden in the side of the tower, the defenders held the enemy at bay until reinforcements arrived.

Following the victory, Islin was promoted. He soon commanded his own army during the campaign to secure a route from the western point of Valdemar Strait to the farthest northeastern outpost near Thunder Mountain, expelling a confederation of Orc clans and Ogryn tribes enraged by the Aravian intrusion. A tactical expert, Islin would often lure the numerically superior enemy into attacking a specific position, then strike their flanks with a hidden reserve force. Islin's abilities soon led him to command all High Elf forces on the coast of Peltas. Although the Elven presence remained somewhat scattered and tenuous, under Islin's leadership, it held firm. Not one to remain a mere rear-line general, during the Battle of Gangrenous Water, Islin joined the counterattack against the Orc advance, wielding his two-handed sword, Eagle's Claw, with brutal efficiency. Furthermore, at Dawnwood, he led the reserves to consolidate a breach in the line, his shining helmet and white cape serving as a beacon for the High Elves who were almost overwhelmed.

Islin's successes at Peltas had restored Aravia's reputation after a series of disastrous campaigns against the Dark Elves of Durham Forest. Queen Eva of Aravia conferred upon him nobility and the position of chief military advisor to the kingdom, that of strategos. In this position, he would not only command the Aravian armies, but also play a role in the court of the High Elves, offering advice on all matters related to the military or potential enemies, and guiding the queen's overall strategies.

The war had made Islin a hero, but after being recalled to Aravia, he found himself with nothing to do. His successes on the battlefield had secured his fame, but the world of Aravian politics proved to be a completely different challenge. Accustomed to the obedience of his soldiers, Islin found it difficult to adapt to the underhanded tactics and shifting loyalties of the court. Nevertheless, his record of military success still commanded respect, and he continually gathered supporters and political allies. He forged a reputation as a blunt and brutally honest man, able to win the precious favor of the queen herself. Other nobles who had served or had connections in the Aravian armies also rallied to the former general, increasing his influence. He learned not to take courtiers at their word, and to adapt and apply his strategic skills to political ends.

Islin had always been a proud man, but as he grew accustomed to his new role at the Aravian court, his arrogance increased. He was popular with the Aravian soldiers and many of the common people, and soon he was courted by a number of factions. He came to call himself the White Eagle, a subtle nod to the great elven ruler Basileus Roanas, who had stemmed the tide of the Demonic Spawn during the First Great War. His arrogance ultimately led to his downfall, as his opponents were able to convince others that his brutal honesty was a cover for his true desire: to claim the throne.

The veracity of claims that Islin was planning a coup remains a matter of conjecture. It seems unlikely that the idea of usurping power from the Queen of Aravia ever crossed his proud mind, but the belief held by some that the armies of Aravia were waiting only for an order to launch an armed rebellion to place the White Eagle on the throne is also certainly exaggerated. One thing is certain: Islin's opponents acted quickly and decisively. The queen was convinced that Islin was a threat to the kingdom, and after a trial that Islin claimed was rigged, he was banished from the kingdom.

Since that day, Islin has been traveling through Anhelt, a nobleman without a domain, a general without an army. Even though he was summarily stripped of his title of strategos, he still uses it to introduce himself and claims that when he finally returns to Aravia, he will proclaim the uprising of his armies and the long-awaited succession of the White Eagle to the throne.
