History of Truath
For Dark Elves, loyalty is a rare and precious commodity. Few are those who don't feel the burn of ambition, and even rarer are those who wouldn't betray their own family for influence or advantage.
But there are some Dark Elves who have made a name for themselves by giving their loyalty to the highest bidder and never breaking a contract once they've accepted it. Many of these singular beings often act as bodyguards for anyone who can pay their exorbitant prices. But among them, one name stands out above the rest: Truath.
Like many of his peers, Truath began his career as a soldier, albeit under a different name. He was the leader of a hand-picked elite; veteran warriors whose job it was to find the weak spot in the enemy battle line, then exploit it.
Thanks to Truath's almost instinctive understanding of tactics and strategy, his warriors were able to turn a stalemate into a rout, or break an enemy's attack on both flanks, allowing an entire army to escape.
However, Truath's success on the battlefield did not translate into success off it. Never the most diplomatic of warriors, Truath turned his superiors into enemies by pointing out the flaws in their strategies. His exploits gave them a poor impression, for Truath's interventions had been credited, time and again, with bringing victory or saving armies from total destruction in the field.
Although Truath initially paid little heed to the resentment of his commanders, it became impossible to ignore it when, during the Battle of the Red Vine Gorge, he and his warriors were sent into the middle of enemy orc troops without any support, on the orders of a junior officer whom he had inadvertently insulted. Truath's detachment was all but destroyed, and Truath himself mortally wounded.
By the time Truath had recovered, his commanders' war against the Orcs was all but over. Haunted by the memory of what had happened, Truath changed his name and looked for a new job.
Lacking the guts for assassin work, and no talent for schemes, Truath found himself offering his services as a bodyguard as he pondered how best to ensure his previous failures didn't recur.
At first, Truath's employers were second-rate merchants and civil servants, but with each successful contract, his reputation grew. Employing the skills he'd acquired in his previous life, Truath could single-handedly defeat a group of hitmen or help his protégé easily evade almost any ambush. In time, members of the nobility took notice of his skills and Truath found himself with a whole new type of clientele, who paid far more than his previous employers.
After an incident involving the rescue of a sorcerer condemned to death by his rivals, Truath even received a mystical object as payment. The mortal Wand of Life became his constant companion, more than once making the difference between life and death for him and his clients.
The object proved to be a boon to his longevity in more ways than one; its sinister magic added the lifespan of its victims to that of the wearer, enabling Truath to extend his life and, indeed, those of others too if he so wished, by decades beyond normal.
Now moving in rarefied circles, Truath discovered that there was more than one way to defend his charges, and himself. He realized that during his career as a soldier, he had made the mistake of only paying attention to the battlefield, and of totally ignoring the political games played by his peers and superiors.
Determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past, Truath learned all he could about his clients, as well as their friends and enemies. He learned the names of servants and bodyguards, noting those vulnerable to bribes or threats, and used both methods to learn what he could about their masters.
He took note of the ever-changing networks of alliances and rivalries, and used what he had gleaned to his advantage to ensure that he received the best price for his services and never found himself on the wrong side, facing adversaries too powerful for him to defeat, in battle or otherwise.
Soon, Truath was known as the most ingenious, successful and dangerous bodyguard in all of Durham Forest. Today, such is his renown that bidding wars often erupt as nobles vie for his services, and the mere rumor that he's been hired by one faction or another has put an end, publicly at least, to countless feuds.
What's more, Truath's hard-won knowledge of the shifting political networks of Durham Forest has made him more than just a physical threat to the enemies of those who hire him. It is said that he can paralyze a noble house with a well-placed word in the ear of a scullery maid as easily as he can defeat an assassin in combat.
