Many bards prefer the songs of good kings, of righteous kings whose hearts bleed for the misfortunes of their people and whose every day is devoted to appeasement of those same misfortunes. But, alas, it is in the nature of mortals to let greed, pride and ambition lead them astray. This is the case of King Versulf, nicknamed the Sinister because of his lack of humor and his cruelty. Once he ruled a thriving city-state in the lands that would become the Stormwind Wasteland, and his wickedness was so great that even the grave could not end it. Nothing meant more to Versulf than temporal power, and that is why he waged many wars against neighboring states. His subjects suffered greatly under the yoke of the exorbitant taxes that Versulf demanded to finance his projects and the horrific living conditions in which they were gradually forced to live. But if the king was heartless and mean, he was not stupid. Around him a coterie of sycophants and devoted bodyguards have gathered; Versulf granted them dominion over all others to plunder and exploit as they pleased. Versulf feared only one enemy: death. Though he mocked Lumaya's preachers and defied them, in his private moments the tyrant dreaded what would happen when his mortal shell could take no more. Like so many others, he sought advice from the masters of dark magic within and without his court, but the ravenous hunger for the unliving death did not appeal to him. Eventually, it was the emissary of K'leath's death cult who managed to capture Versulf's attention by promising to resurrect him in a new and stronger form in return for his patronage. Thus a new and terrible alliance was forged. Versulf devoted the rest of his life to strengthening his ties to the cult. He had given them slaves, sacrificial victims and abundant wealth, and their hold on the kingdom was growing day by day. In return, the priests of K'leath performed gruesome rituals to prolong the tyrant's life and prepare his spirit for inevitable demise. Legends say he lived no less than four hundred years and perished in excruciating pain when his body finally collapsed, beset by countless ailments and unable to withstand the onslaught of the time. Yet the cult of K'leath persevered, evolving into the militant sect known today as the Knights of the Revenant. So it was with the covenant they had made. The time has come, and after centuries of slumber, the ancient king has risen. In his new body charged with arcane energies, Versulf the Sinister seeks to reclaim the power he wielded eons ago. His city may be dust and ruins, but he leads many cultists and has taken the key to the Chest of Oblivion. The latter holds the mysteries of life and death that would allow Versulf's spirit to change bodies at will, thus ending his need for the cult. It will take a brave summoner to foil the tyrant's plans and bring him into Lumaya's fold, for although he is a creature of evil, his martial skills and might remain a tremendous asset that could be used in the war against The shadow.
