Even before the demonic invasion, the caves and tunnels connecting the various dwarf strongholds were unsafe. Beasts, bandits, and even occasional incursions by Ogryns or Orcs were commonplace. That is why the need for dedicated guards and scouts arose, and many brave dwarves answered the call.
Tunnel stewards, as they are known, are a militia of volunteers. They avoid heavy armor in favor of greater mobility and often prefer ranged weapons that allow them to engage the enemy and retreat when they wish. Given the tough nature of the subterranean beasts they face, tunnel stewards do not hesitate to coat their arrows and quivers with poison, or use other less direct means to gain the upper hand.
