Story of Roric Poison-Dragon (Roric Wyrmbane)
Dragons are the first-born. They are among the oldest beings in creation and are now all servants of Siroth's Demonic Rejects. They are immortal and so powerful that they are virtually indestructible. If their mortal form can be defeated, their souls will be sent back to Anathraad after death, from where they may one day return to Teleria through one of the many portals, just as ferocious as before.
A dragon, Hellrazor, wreaked havoc on the Frostheim Confederation after the Second Great War. The six kings of Frostheim gave up hope of slaying the beast, but their Dwarf-trained blacksmith, Askara the Dwarf Parent, made a proposal. Using an unbreakable chain forged from Dwarven runic texts and Aravian arcana, they could trap not only the dragon, but also its soul, preventing it from returning to Anathraad. The six kings agreed, but there was a problem: how could the monster be persuaded to land, and how could he be held down long enough for Askara to attach the chain?
So they turned to Roric. One of the kingdom's few surviving jarls from the Second War, he was Frostheim's finest commander. He was one of their most powerful warriors and wielded an enchanted hammer so powerful it could crush Hellrazor's skull. His mission would certainly bring about his death: Hellrazor had already killed hundreds of people in just a few days. Roric had no illusions about the danger, but he knew his responsibilities and what was at stake. He accepted the kings' request and drew up a plan.
At Roric's request, the six kings ordered selected parts of their treasures to be deposited in a cave on the mountainside, to lure the greedy Hellrazor into its depths. Askara bolted one end of the chain to the cave wall, then went into hiding with Roric. When the dragon landed, Askara stayed out of sight, a piece of the chain in her arms. Roric, meanwhile, emerged from his hiding place and blocked the cavern exit behind the dragon, hammer in hand. The battle between the jarl and the dragon was violent and terrible. Roric broke bones, shattered scales and cracked teeth, while dodging every blow. But even Roric's skills weren't enough to avoid Hellrazor's strikes indefinitely. Eventually, he was caught in a spray of the dragon's fiery breath, and the creature struck him violently with its tail. He cried out in pain, losing his hammer and falling to the ground next to one of the monster's broken teeth. He had, however, distracted the dragon long enough for Askara to slip between the combatants and magically bind his chain to the dragon, trapping it in the cavern.
When Hellrazor realized he was caught, he spun around, tugged furiously at the chain and showered it with torrents of flame, but to no avail. Enraged, he threw himself against his bonds, again and again, and roared his fury down the mountainside. As he flailed and struggled, he could no longer protect himself. Using the last of his strength, Roric, burnt and dying, climbed onto the beast's back, scaled its long neck and hammered the broken tooth he'd found directly into the monster's skull. At that moment, Hellrazor screamed and struggled in all directions, before finally collapsing, dead. Unlike all the other Demonic Rejects who had been killed before, his soul remained trapped in his body. Although he would inevitably return to physical life, he would be trapped there, unless the chain or the magic ever broke.
Roric Poison-Dragon fell from the beast's neck to the ground with a crunch of chain mail and broken bones. Askara rushed to help him, but his burns and other wounds were too terrible to be treated, even by a skilled mage. It was going to take a miracle to save him, and that's what he got.
A brilliant golden light streamed down through the entrance to the cavern, and a beautiful, elegant figure in gleaming armor and fiery red hair weaved its way through stalagmites and stalactites. She reached the dying Roric and offered him a Shard, in which he could preserve his life to defend Teleria until the end of time. Roric was exhausted. He was in agony, so much so that he could barely think. He was afraid, but through the fog of his last moments he felt pride. He had saved his people and couldn't bear the thought of leaving them forever. He accepted. Then he disappeared, his body vanished and his soul was absorbed into the woman's golden crystal. Askara returned to the six kings to tell them of Roric's victory. They named him Poison-Dragon.
