Story of Yakarl the Scourge
Clad in ornate armor of black steel, gold, and frost, Yakarl strides through the storm of battle like an icy giant from the myths of ancient Norr. He is a living legend himself, a champion of the time when norr raiders crossed the ocean and struck terror into the hearts of anyone unlucky enough to catch their rapacious gaze. The runes tattooed on his body and carved into the beard of his ax still shine with the vicious glory of that time, but today he serves a higher power. Even as a young warrior, Yakarl was renowned for his strength, courage, and luck. He made a name for himself on daring forays up the coast of Aravia, razing and plundering small villages before fleeing with rich loot before Elven forces gathered to retaliate. He earned the respect of his fellow warriors and soon led a small band in even bolder ventures that took him from the stormy straits of Valdemar to the rocky shores of Kaerok. Tales of Yakarl's exploits spread, and his wealth grew over the years, as did his authority among the Norr. But that was not enough to satisfy his thirst for fame. He wanted nothing less than to become a leader whose name would be acclaimed more than any other. Also, when an old skald passed through his lands singing songs about an ancient weapon forged by the hand of Brimir himself, Yakarl paid attention. He greeted the stranger with honor, summoning a feast in a burst of ostentatious hospitality. At the height of the festivities, with all his guests drunk on mead and ale, Yakarl swore to travel north and find the legendary ax of Allwinter in a quest that would be forever celebrated. He outfitted eight ships to set sail, his bravest warriors at his side. Some advised Yakarl to abandon this crazy dream, or at least wait until next year – winter was approaching, and the treacherous waters of the North Sea would soon become almost impassable. But the leader remained implacable. He will not renounce his oath, even in the face of grave danger, for it would bring him dishonor he cannot bear. Thus the ships left the steep haven of Yakarl in the space of a fortnight. They sailed through storm and blizzard, fighting for their lives against both nature and the vicious monsters that inhabited the North. One after another, Yakarl's ships were lost, sunk or overrun, but he held his course. Even when the twinkling lights of dawn shone in the sky and Yakarl's ship was the only one to survive, he refused to turn back. But his crew having shrunk, he too began to lose hope. Too weak to fight his way through the frozen waters, his choice was simple: succeed or die trying. But even in those darkest hours, Yakarl's fortune did not fail him. On Christmas night, Yakarl stood alone at the prow of his ship, pondering the cruelties of fate and the depth of his pride. The freezing cold held him still more securely than any chain forged by mortal hands, and death seemed almost certain. It was then that Yakarl heard a chime of bells that seemed to permeate his very mind. It was a strange sound, which made him think he had finally gone mad. In reality, this chime announced the arrival of their savior. To his surprise, Yakarl saw the old skald who had told him the legend of the Axe, but this skald now rode a sledge that rose above the water, no longer clad in rags but in shining armor. and a vibrant coat of crimson and white. It was none other than Sir Nicholas himself who came to see the brave sailors who had traveled this distance and faced countless dangers. He addressed Yakarl in a voice that sounded like thunder and wielded the ax of Allwinter, the very one that had driven Chief Norr into the jaws of death. She would be his, Nicholas proclaimed, for few had the will and the determination to survive in these inhospitable lands. But there was a catch. Yakarl had to swear to put his life in the service of the goddess Lumaya and to fight as a champion against the forces of darkness that threatened Teleria. Thus, according to the ancient warrior, he would gain glory and fame beyond his wildest dreams. In a way, it was a dream come true. Wield a weapon of ancient power, fight eternally against worthy foes, and be hailed as a hero by mortals throughout the mortal realms? Yakarl agreed without hesitation, and in a flash of blinding light, Sir Nicholas bound his soul to one of the shards given by Lumaya. Thus imbued with the power of the goddess and with his prize in hand, Yakarl led the survivors home. There he divides his wealth among them and chooses a worthy successor to rule in his place. Once his duty to his people was accomplished, Yakarl returned to the North, where his new eternal life awaited him.
