François is a boss from Act I of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. You run into him at the Nid d’Esquie, right after hiring Sciel.
He is vulnerable to the element Obscure and starts the battle with 5 shields. The key: break his shields quickly and time your counters right. Do that, and this unusual boss will go down without too much trouble.

Where is François?
François is in the Nest of’Esquie, to the east of the map of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. When you get there, you run into Esquie. For him to help you, you have to bring him his stone. That stone is in the possession of his neighbor, François.
You'll find it in the cave right next to’Esquie. Just follow the path that runs alongside the nest; the cave entrance is easy to spot on the left.
- Zone: The Nest of’Esquie, in the eastern part of the map (red arrow)
- Specific point: the nearby cave, just a few steps from’Esquie
- Objective : Collect the stone to unlock the help from’Esquie
Once you have the stone in your hand, go back and see Esquie to ask for his help with the expedition.
What are François' combat mechanics?
In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, François is a huge, shiny rock (a turtle, according to him). He attacks with the Ice element, but his real weakness lies elsewhere. Understanding his mechanics changes the entire battle.
His weakness: the Dark element
François is vulnerable to the Dark element. It's counterintuitive, because its icy appearance makes you want to try Fire. It doesn't work.
To exploit this weakness in battle, target its weak points with Dark attacks. This will trigger a breach that increases the damage taken by the boss.
His main attacks
François unleashes a series of Ice-type attacks on your team. His attacks often hit only one character at a time, but they pack a powerful punch.

- His basic attacks are still predictable. A well-timed counterattack deals damage back to him and gives you the upper hand.

François starts the battle with 5 shields. As long as they last, your damage is reduced. Each hit breaks one.
Your priority in the first round is therefore simple: destroy his shields, then follow up with your most powerful abilities once his guard is down.
What tips do you have for easily beating François?
This is a challenging battle: François can take out one of your characters in a single hit in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It also starts with 5 shields that must be broken before you can deal significant damage to it. Its main weakness is the element Obscure, not ice, as its rocky appearance might suggest.
Break his shields first
Focus your first few turns on breaking his 5 shields. Each successful counterattack and each well-placed attack removes one. Target his weak spot with Dark attacks to advance faster.
Attacks by Sciel deal Dark damage and directly exploit this weakness. Save your most powerful abilities for when its guard is down. Once the shields are broken, you’ll only have a brief window to deal damage, so strike hard.
Master the timing of counterattacks
Timing your counterattacks is the key to success in this fight against François. He strings together rapid, sometimes deceptive attacks to make you miss your block. Watch the animation before pressing the button, rather than anticipating too early.
For his most dangerous attack—the one that can knock an opponent out—he prefers the’dodging rather than blocking if you're unsure about your timing. A failed dodge hurts less than a missed block.
Recommended Team Roster
At this point in the adventure, go with Sciel to exploit François's Obscur weakness. Put her at the front of your attacks as soon as his shields go down. Always keep a character on hand who can revive a fallen ally.

What should you do if a character gets knocked out?
If François takes out one of your characters, don't panic. Revive them as soon as possible using a resurrection ability or a dedicated item. Keep dodging in the meantime so you don't lose another ally right after that.
