It happened many years ago in the city of Arnoc. A talented young mage named Alvano sought to unravel a mystery that had long fascinated scholars and sorcerers: the enigma of Creation. Despite their best efforts, no mortal had ever been able to reproduce the creation of a soul that truly animated a living being.
Souls could be manipulated, preserved, and bound to a body in the limbo of undead death, but never conjured into an artificial vessel. Alvano was an incredibly gifted man, whose intelligence allowed him to study at the most prestigious academy in Arnoc despite his modest origins. Affected by the death of his parents, Alvano sought to use his affinity for magic and his knowledge to defeat death once and for all.
Unfortunately, despite all his genius, he was also obsessive, incapable of seeing the big picture. Thus, throughout his research, Alvano never questioned his goals or methods. Only the result mattered to him. Although his talents were not sufficient to transform ether into living anima, Alvano believed he could make use of echoes and fragments.
Since the bodies resurrected by necromancers still possessed remnants of their former skills, he suspected that some form of imprint remained after the soul had departed. And that these imprints could be forged together to create something new. Thus was born Alvano's morbid obsession with the dead.
He spent days and weeks in morgues and cemeteries, observing and, when possible, experimenting with the recently deceased. He eventually developed a ritual of his own. By sewing together pieces of flesh that, in Alvano's mind, most closely resembled the "imprints" of the soul, and placing a precious magical gem in place of the heart, he sought to create a vessel capable of withstanding the massive force of arcane energy that would be necessary for the soul to burst forth.
He began the ritual at the height of a storm, placing the artificial body in one of the city's tallest towers, chanting passages from ancient grimoires and directing the stolen power of the lightning bolts striking the tower's spire. Electric arcs shot from the bound vessel, flashing brightly as Alvano poured his own magic into the same focusing gem. Finally, with a howl of pain and misery, the creature lunged forward and broke the enchanted chains that held it in place.
In a moment of trauma and shock, the monster struck savagely and threw its creator off the raised platform where the ritual was taking place, killing him instantly before staggering away into the streets. Terrified residents speak of horrific massacres and rivers of blood, but these are nothing more than tall tales.
The imposing monster struck fear into the hearts of all who crossed its path, though few dared to walk the city streets in the midst of the storm, and none were foolish enough to approach the raging monstrosity as it charged toward the nearest gates. It seriously injured several guards who tried to block its path, then rushed into the wilderness outside.
Since that day, the creature has hardly been seen again. The Tavellers sometimes speak of a deformed giant that roams the forests and fields at dusk, but so far, no one has been able to say for sure what became of Alvano's ambitious creation, or even whether he succeeded in giving it a soul, or whether it was simply another undead creature animated by the power of magic.
