Hogwarts Legacy includes side quests during which players can demand a reward before returning collected items to their rightful owners, or even choose to keep these items for themselves if they wish. At the same time, for some main story missions, they are asked to make a choice. This is the case for the first visit to Hogsmeade where players can come with Natty or Sebastian. Shortly after, during the first potions lesson with Professor Sharp, one of the students Gareth Weasley will ask you to steal a Fwooper feather from the professor's office. He reassures you that you risk nothing, but of course you have the choice between trusting him or not. We will see the possible scenarios.

To sum up, yes, you absolutely must steal the Fwooper feather for Gareth Weasley. Indeed, there are no lasting consequences if you decide to steal the feather. But there are also no real consequences for not stealing the feather, which means it doesn't really matter what you decide to do. However, if you decide not to help Garreth Weasley by stealing Fwooper's quill from Professor Sharp's office, you'll miss a rather amusing scene.
If you choose to steal Fwooper's feather
If you choose to steal Fwooper's feather and hand it to Gareth, he'll add it to his potion, which will surely explode and produce some rather impressive fireworks. Professor Sharp will know right away that you stole the quill and will confront you about it at the end of class. If you decide to be honest and admit it, he will praise you for your honesty. Otherwise, he will tell you that you need to start taking responsibility for your actions. In any case, this has no major impact on the sequence of events.
If you don't steal Fwooper's feather
If you choose not to help Gareth, he will be a bit disappointed but will eventually understand and resolve to find a solution on his own. Even if his potion explodes again, Professor Sharp will congratulate you for saying no (ironically, he will even if he really doesn't). More importantly, you can always complete Gareth's side quest a bit later, which means it doesn't really matter whether you steal the feather or not.
