Do you want to change your IP address ? Two solutions: Restart your router (free, but only works with certain ISPs) or use a vpn (instant and reliable).
But first, we need to distinguish between two types of addresses:
- The private (or local) IP address, used within your network, between your router and your devices.
- The public IP address, the one that identifies you online to the websites and services you visit.
It's the public IP address that we're interested in here. Here's how to change yours!

With a VPN
The fastest way to change your IP address, that's the vpn. When you connect to one of its servers, you instantly get a new public IP address located in the country of your choice. Your real IP address is hidden behind the server's IP address.
In concrete terms, a VPN Encrypt your internet connection and redirects all your traffic. The websites you visit see the server's IP address, not yours.
It's a real plus for your security and to access geo-restricted content based on your location.
Here's how to do it, step by step:
- Choose one Reliable VPN, then create an account.
- Install the app on your device (Windows, Mac, Android Where iOS).
- Open the app and log in to the preferred country.
- Check your new IP address When you go to mon-ip.com, a new value should appear.
Our recommendation:
By restarting your router
The other option, Free and requires no installation, is to restart your internet router.
Please note: This only works if your provider assigns you a Dynamic IP via the DHCP protocol.
This is the case at Orange. On the other hand, Free, SFR and Bouygues assign a fixed or quasi-fixed IPv4 address, which is often shared with other subscribers: for them, restarting the router won't make any difference.
Here's how it works:
- Go to mon-ip.com to rate your the router's public IP address current. It appears directly on the home page, as shown in the image below.

- Turn off your box completely and Unplug it from the outlet. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes so that your Internet service provider can assign you a new IP address.
- Plug your router back in and wait for your internet connexion be restored.
- Go back to mon-ip.com to Find the IP address that was assigned to you: a new value should appear, as shown below.

Change is not not guaranteed every time. Tone FAI It may sometimes assign you the same IP address again, especially if the outage is too short.
In that case, extend the delay before the lights turn off.
If the address stays the same, go straight to the VPN. You can also contact your internet service provider, but not all of them will agree to change your public IP address.
