The celebration of New Year's Eve is always the subject of debate within the Muslim community. Is it allowed or not? In this text, let's find out together what it is Haram to celebrate the new year?
Is it allowed to celebrate New Year's Eve?
Opinions on New Year's Eve are divided between supporters and detractors. Some people point to a cultural dimension, far removed from the religious aspect. The fact of being Haram or Halal depends on how it is celebrated. On the other hand, drinking alcohol and going out clubbing are still forbidden by Islam. However, this does not preclude visiting family during the holiday.
In the Gregorian calendar, the New Year is a commercial holiday. Sales, discounts, etc. are all part of the celebration. Muslims are intrigued by a number of aspects, as the fads are not the same at the end of the Hegira year.
What does religion think?
In Islam, only Aid Al Fitr and Aid AI Adha are authorized celebrations and considered "feasts". Thus, no other occasion, namely the New Year of the Hegira calendar, should be celebrated by Muslims. The Hadith reported by Anas said: "When the Prophet SWS arrived in Medina, he found that people used to have fun on two that they chose in the year. So he said to them: Allah has replaced these two feast days with two better ones: these are the days of al Adha and al Fitr".
As a result, other feasts such as Christmas and the Gregorian New Year are Haram in Islam. This is supported by Hadith Al-Boukhâriyy: "There will come a time when many of my community will follow the habits of the Jews and Christians step by step, to the point that even if they enter the hole of a lizard, they will follow them".
In short, celebrating holidays such as New Year's Eve on the Gregorian calendar is Haram among Muslims.
